No New Posts Buying vs. Tying your own (Preview) Fly Tying and Fly discussions 7 4844

I've heard from people in the past on here and on Kienes that tying your own flys does not save you money. I'm kinda confused, cuz at an average of 2 bucks a fly it costs me at least 20 bucks for 10 flys. That's if I don't buy bead headed flys. Those cost 2.35. So I'm looking at 20-30 bucks for 10 flies. I can tie 3...

No New Posts Putah gives it up in the Fall! (Preview) Putah Creek Fly Fishing 10 1314

Probably not what you were expecting, but I thought I'd mix it up a bit before the shananigans start up again.  Caught these feisty little bass in Davis after work yesterday.

No New Posts Tiemco hooks - consistently sharp? (Preview) Fly Tying and Fly discussions 0 1578

I must admit that I have been disappointed with the consistency of the sharpness of Tiemco hooks, particularly the 2x heavy hooks (e.g. 3769, 2457, 3761).  The smaller sizes of theses hooks are more consistently sharp (but not all of them), but the larger sizes seem to be much more inconsistent.  Ear...

No New Posts Putah Creek Trout Gazette Vol 1 (Preview) Putah Creek Fly Fishing 3 1098

Hi there forum members: Fishing is picking up, if you don't mind small fish. Reports are that multiple hook ups are the rule, although many of the fish are going airborne on the set. Rumor has it that Shon is hogging his hole again-another good sign that fishing is getting better. Flows should be coming...

No New Posts Need a guide for Dad. Suggestions? (Preview) Putah Creek Fly Fishing 4 1084

So for years my dad and I used to fish the Pit River in the summer months. But that was when we lived closer. After moving to the Davis area years ago we took up trolling Lake Berryessa and spinner rods were not any good on the Putah.  He's been fly fishing mostly the American and Yuba and Feather for the past...

No New Posts Some High Sierra Fun (Preview) Other Rivers, Streams and Lakes 16 1736

As we all know the Sac Valley Rivers have really been on fire for trout and steelhead. And I, as well as a few others have been hitting them pretty hard. I decided that I wanted to get away from the crowds, cars, noises and smog and hit up some high sierra streams before the snow comes in and blocks my cha...

No New Posts North Fork Mokelumne (Preview) Other Rivers, Streams and Lakes 4 1422

After several delays, me and Steve finally got a trip on Sat. I had this spot on my list of places to fish as I had driven by the turnoff a number of times but always put it off. The rain made for a good day of fishing drys. Didn't see any rock climbers. See if you can find Steve in the last photo

No New Posts Marabou nymphs (Preview) Fly Tying and Fly discussions 8 4154

I think the two most important materials in a fly tiers arsenals are pea**** herl and marabou, in that order. They have so much appeal, and at least a dozen well known flies use them, if not a hundred. I found a recipe years ago in a book I own named Trout Flies of The West. In it there was a tying style from a Co...

Hi all, my name is Chris. Im a new member here and was hoping to get some info on fishing Putah. Hit the river yesterday with Brian. We did well in the early morning then it slowed considerably. Moved to another spot and consistently picked up fish through the afternoon but at a much slower rate. Between the 2 of we must of had 20 fish to hand. Here is a pic of Brian with the average size fish caught. E...

Just a few hours to the south! The water is managable and the fish were hitting nymphs at the tops of pools all day. Around 6pm there was an impressive BWO Hatch. I got the fish in the pic just shy of the market at El Portal.

I have been working way too hard lately, so I took 3 fly fishing customers out on a 2 boat drift with Ryan Johnston on the Lower Sac last Thursday. We went Posse Grounds to the RV Park.  There are small numbers of salmon in the system right now.  Only a couple were in the redds and none seemed to be actively e...
