Hi,? I am looking for opinions.? I am of the opinion that Putah is NOT what it was ten or 15 years ago and I am also of the opinion that it will continue to decline in the future.? I do not see easy solutions to too low flows in winter and excessive pressure and mud snails.? I think this fishery is one in decline...
im thinking of hitting the creek this weekend. just seeing if anyone has been up there and caught anything since the rain? -- Edited by live2fish888 at 21:14, 2009-03-05

I was curious if anyone has ever fished Cache Creek.? I recall reading several years ago that there were some posts about?trout fishing above Indian Valley Reservoir on Cache Creek?????? I've never fished it myself.? I also recall a Cal FLy Fisher article on it about 4 years ago, but there is no librar...
I am a proponent of indicator nymphing.? Who/what started this undercurrent of hatred for indicators?? ?Now then I agree there is a time for one and a time not to use one.? I have talked to folks that seem to think using an indicator is not flyfishing.? I just don't know where this type of thought origina...

I recently tested the knots I have been using for many, many years. I discovered that the knots Ive been using were not as strong as they could have been. The three knots I tested were the three knots that I use most frequently: the improved clinch, the blood knot and the duncan loop. For my test I used 5X Um...
I gave the American River a try yesterday.? It was my first time on that water.? We had takes on Egg sucking leeches, and egg patterns.? No fish to hand.? I did see 5 landed, one in the tail.? I was below the dam (which is a place you could park and keep an eye on your rig while fishing).? A couple other guy fly f...
I'm pretty sure that I have heard people talking about fly fishing at night for big fish, especially big browns. A)I thought you couldn't fish at night (maybe just in my home waters). Hmm, I do know that you can fish for catfish at night... B)How do you fly fish at night? Put a head lamp on and look for your f...
This tip should help with setting your hook while tight line nymphing.? I am not sure if?this?works so well indicator fishing.? I don't use an indicator.? When you are essentially pulling your line down stream with the current (into the direction the fish is facing) and you feel a hesitation, a bump,...
Anyone up for getting a group together and hitting the show one day and maybe grabbing a bite and a beer afterward? This year it's Feb 27, 28 and March 1
I ran into a friend and member of this board (Matt R) yesterday at the hospital.? He and his wife just had a baby.? The baby is healthy and doing fine.? However, Matt's wife is not doing very well.? I don't want to go into any details without his permission, but I wanted to ask all of you to keep Matt and his fa...

?So i hit the creek on Tuesday, got skunked but oh well. The water was very brown/muddy and I realized that I did not know how that changed the game when it comes to fly fishing for trout. I mean if I was at the river, I would have grabbed the nearest chartruse lure and taken it for a swim. Any thoughts/advice...

Fished Putah today for the first time ever.? It was uncrowded but tough.? Picked up lots of salad on nearly every drift.? Caught a few caddis cases and one 18 inch rainbow.? Fun.? I'm wondering if the water always this color?? I went upstream to see and was suprised that it was coming in green and murky fr...
I have yet to fish anywhere but the eastern sierras. I grew up there and I know that I can catch fish there. Perhaps it's just because I have yet to fish elsewhere, but I feel a little intimidated when I think about fishing anywhere but the eastern sierras. I'm still relatively new to fly fishing, so that p...
Ditch the indicator! There was a great article in a past California Fly Fisher about direct contact nymphing. Basically high sticking without an indicator. The article states that no matter how well you think you are dead drifting, if you have an indicator tied on you are causing drag. You will learn...
Etiquette is probably the wrong word and I don't want to start any big deal threads with a bunch of controversy....BUT...I post on some other boards and I know others do as well. My question is like the old hotspotting question... I don't see anyone ever reporting on Putah, the LStan and maybe some othe...
Back a week or two ago I witnessed a pretty good hatch of these bugs on a local river. They were everywhere. Climbing on rocks, trees, and me. Anybody know what they are? Thanks to jburge from Kiene's board for the pix.

I made a lot of bad decisions yesterday... wanted to try the creek, but decided to wait and pair up with a pal and go with Mr Bonovich for a 1/2 day and get the lay of the land. I think that's probably a good decision. After deciding the creek was out I motored to the foothills and passed up Pardee for Amador.....
