No New Posts Any suggestions for wading boots for backpacking? (Preview)
I do a lot of backpacking in the eastern sierras in the summertime, and would like to find a pair of lightweight boots or booties.  some high country lakes require wading to get your fly past the shelf and its always a drag having to haul in my chest waders and heavy boots when space and weight are limited....

No New Posts Orvis (Preview)
I thought this rod was a couple years older.  I found the paperwork while packing boxes in preparation for the move to Michigan. It has been my go to rod from Eagle lake, Pit, Lower Sac, Feather, Yuba, Putah, etc etc.  I've never owned a really fast tapered rod and this one is far from it.  I just like them s...

No New Posts Cold weather gloves (Preview)
Late last year I basically cut the end of my left middle finger off and had it sewn back on.   For the most part, it is pretty numb but cold air does wake it up in a not so good way.   I suppose this would be a perfect question for steelhead fishermen, what gloves do you prefer?

No New Posts old post on knots (Preview)
I do a lot of sniffing around different boards looking at "old" posts for info.  Here is a little snippet from 2009 regarding knots.  I never really give my line much thought while out on the water but found this very applicable.  I can certainly reflect back on breaking off snags or fish and finding my l...

No New Posts Favorite 5 weight rod for nymphing? (Preview)
My oldest son finally has a decent job and is looking for a 5 weight for nymphing.  He's thinking about a Sage, but frankly, for tossing lead that seems like overkill with a high price.  My favorite nymphing rod is a 4 weight St Croix Legend.  I've never used/tried some of the newer rods like TFO, Redingt...

No New Posts wading boots (Preview)
I've been saving money a couple of years to buy an old flat fender jeep but finally talked myself out of it, went a different route and decided to get more flyfishing time in.  I bit the bullet and ordered a pair of G3 waders today but didn't feel like throwing money at boots yet.  I've got an old pair of Wein...

No New Posts Cabelas selling Prestige Plus reels for $20. (Preview)
If you need another reel or are just curious about this product, these Prestige Plus reels are good and you won't ever find anything better for $20 - or even $50.  I've been using them for about a year now and can't find anything wrong with them except that they are not precision machined like the super e...

No New Posts Fixing issues with Ross FC and FS fly rods. (Preview)
A few days ago I was notified that Cabelas was selling the Redington Vapen fly rod for 1/2 price.  I generally steer away from Redington based on my experience with their CPX line, however, on a trip to Pyramid Lake this year I met a gentleman from SoCal who was using a Vapen 7wt.  I liked the non-cork, go...

No New Posts Dryft Waders (Preview)
Has anyone tried the Dryft brand waders?  The price point is good, and if they are what they claim to be, very durable and cut better for the movement required on rivers like Putah (climbing over downed trees and boulders).

No New Posts Disc vs. Click and pawl and diameter questions (Preview)
Anyone have a strong opinion on which is the way to go on a 9' 5wt? I'm debating between the Leland Classic Trout reel (2.9" diameter with click and pawl) vs the Ross CLA (3.25" diameter with disc drag).  How important is that extra .35"?  As far as drag...I've been told that the click an...

No New Posts A bunch of reviews of inexpensive rods and reels. (Preview)
Last year I went on a buying/testing binge from Amazon, Sierra Trading Post and Cabelas since they had a lot of products on sale.  I didn't need any of this stuff, but it sure was fun experimenting.  Hopefully, this will help some of you guys if you need to buy new equipment this year. Rods: Redington CPX...

No New Posts Dyneema as fly reel backing. (Preview)
This year I decided to try a less expensive and possibly just as good alternative to the usual fly line backings like Dacron and gel-spun lines.  Dyneema seems like the perfect alternative.  It doesn't stretch, is really tough and thin for the rated breaking strength.  For the rated strength Dynee...

No New Posts Scientific Anglers Frequency lines (Preview)
Anyone using these new fly lines?  At $50 I'm wondering how they perform.  My experience has shown that anything under $70 doesn't do what I want it to do well enough ie shoot, mend, roll cast etc.

No New Posts Orvis Sling Pack sale through 10/12/14 (Preview)
I have the smaller Safe Passage sling pack and really like it.  This is a steal at this price.  Good through 10/12/14 midnight.  The only downside that I have found is that they are not waterproof and so if you don't take care you will get your contents wet.

No New Posts Greys Streamflex Rods (Preview)
Over the years I have had the opportunity to fish a lot of different setups.  From fast action to slow and from graphite to glass.  With the technology in fly rods these days you really can't go wrong.  I am a firm believer in fish what you like and be happy with it.   When it comes to Putah I was on the Winston...

No New Posts Advice on reels (Preview)
Hey guys, Time to upgrade my reel.  I'm fishing a 9' Reddington 5wt.  Two reels in my price range have caught my eye, but I don't know which (if either) is a good choice.  The first is the Ross CLA.  The second is the Sage 4200.  From what I have been reading, both are good choices (which makes me say get the R...

No New Posts Looking at going longer (Preview)
Looking for a little help please. I'm looking at getting a longer than 9'-0 rod for some Tight-Line and Euro Nymphing. No New Posts studs (Preview)
So I finally have to break down and get some new boots.  I was gonna go with felt again until the finally outlaw them here in Cali.  I may try the rubber with studs.  One of my buddies was telling me the simms alumabites worked pretty good.  What are you guys using and what's the best option out there??

No New Posts Anyone else using a ContourRoam camera? (Preview)
I bought a camera called a ContourRoam and a headstrap for it.  The camera does 1080p and 720p at 30fp and also does still shots @5 megapixels.  So far so good with the testing.  Easy to connect to a PC too - just plug in a USB cable and the camera appears as another drive.  Video is good, not excellent.  Goo...

No New Posts iOS fishing log (Preview)
I've been looking around for a decent fishing log for the iPhone for a while now and I think I found it. It's called FishTales. It's obviously not fly fishing specific but it has some great features. You can enter fly patterns you use into your "tackle box" including photos. You can take pics...

No New Posts wading jackets? (Preview)
So I was at the shop the other day checking out some wading jackets.  I'm curious if any of you guys can tell me about the neoprene cuffs. No New Posts Cabelas czn 10' 4 weight (Preview)
I begin this posting with a mixture of excitement and guilt. Like all of you I'm sure I'd rather keep my dollars in the U.S , buying American made products and patronizing our retail shops like our beloved fly shops. When I purchase a fly rod or reel etc., and it is of the fixed price point variety like a Sag...

I've been using this for many years now and am about to replace it because the old one is starting to disintegrate.  You don't always need to "get all technical" to catch trout, but when I'm not getting any interest on stand by attractor patterns I slip this over the net and start dipping to se...
