I am thinking of hitting the russian tomorrow for a few hrs ' I recently got some shoting head five feet of heavy line to attach to my line and was wondering what to use for steelies maybe I will stop at kings and ask foor some more advice any comments would be appreciated ie where to go and what flys to use do I swing or should I use a indicator
I've been thinking of going up, but haven't heard anything good about the Russian yet. Anyway, I usually use a floating line with a glo bug of some kind (egg pattern) as a dropper, then I use some sort of nasty looking thing as my main fly (Starlite leech, Jumbo John, or a Double Renegade variation). Other flies I use are Freight Trains and Comets. The hook sizes are usually 6 to 10. I like to use an extra short and heavy scud type hook for my egg patterns. My strikes are usually on the egg pattern and an occasional strike is on the Jumbo. I fish this combo not so much for the fish, but it makes me feel confident.
I was in Healdsburg last week. River was uber muddy. I heard from a buddy that they have been keeping the mouth open for the last week or so. Should be fish coming in...not sure if it has cleared up enough to fish. I have had luck with..Big ol' globugs and big buggy stones under an indicator.....or Comets swung and slowly retrieved on a 300-400 grain sink tip. Orange and Black...Best place to go for an updated report and flies is Western Sports.. talk to Carlo...Good luck.
after talking to the guy at kings in gurneville I ended up using my spinning gear and a spoon . he said you need shooting head ' and some amnesia then a steel head leader . ok thats fifty dollars no can do not today and I still don't know whats what it just gets to confusing to do alone may be I can find someone to show me how to do this with the gear I already have. and just use a steelhead leader and the right fly I don't know I would love to try it though sounds like fun. I wonder what gear setup alistair used up on the trinity the pics he posted were crazy nice fish!
