Brian, what everone is trying to say is in fact quite simple and not at all an attack. Putah is such a small fragile and heavily fished creek throughout the year , why consciously post pictures of huge fish and huge success knowing that hundreds of people will see it? And then in return bringing way too many people out on such a small stretch of water which is already in jeopardy, especially at this time on the year. *More people= (Bad)Less people=(good)*, I mean not everyone is as smart as you with all your fishing "Experience" to take as good of care to the creek as you do. They say that when you are truely good at something that you dont have to bragg about it , your work will say way more than your mouth ever will. Just be a little more humble is all everyone is saying. If someone just happends to be lucky enough to watch you working your magic with your new "top secret" Area-51 fly well then hooray for them, but just keep the pics to yourself to use as bait for babes or something, not chum for sharks.
AC, I know Brian, I've fished with Brian, and he is acting like a spoiled child who doesn't get his way. If logic and reason do not work, I call it like I see it.
I hope everyone who is getting on Brian is not fishing the river because most of the fish in the river are getting ready to spawn, at least the larger ones. Practice what you preach.
Just take it in stride Brian. A couple of us got slammed on here cuz we caught too many little fish. Maybe what everyone really wants is to turn Putah into aquarium. Ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Brian, you need to stop and think before you talk. You always go off on how you try hard to keep people from fishing on the redds. Why would you wanna post pics this time of year if you're trying to keep people away from redds... Really, it's common sense. Sometimes conservation is more important than bragging about your day. So you took a buddy out that was having a rough time??? Since when does someone that you never fished with become your buddy before you even met them... Its guiding. You always talk about people being ignorant... Do you know how ignorant you are being right now? Dude, quit stroking your ego, and start caring for Putah, cuz all you care about is making sure people know that you catch fish.
I hope everyone who is getting on Brian is not fishing the river because most of the fish in the river are getting ready to spawn, at least the larger ones. Practice what you preach.
Ross, people aren't getting on him for fishing the river. It's because he's letting the whole world know during the spawn that there are big fish here.
well....cant help if someone got excited about catching nice fish even though i know what point your making. it just seemed like everyone was bashing on him about the spawning fish that he caught, cause they are clearly in spawning mode, and he gets on everyone else about it. I think argueing is petty and no matter what, if you fish the river this time of year your going to catch a fish thats getting ready to spawn. I think everyone here sounds like they are greater fishermen and know what they are talking about. If there are issues about it then they should shut the river down for spawn cause i come on this site to learn, not read about little arguements.

Seems to me if you "don't get on the site to read a bunch of arguments" then you should not provoke one

Again, it wasn't that he caught the fish... It was because he posted pics of them during spawning season. A lot of people come on this website that aren't members... A lot of poachers too. We're trying to keep people from fishing the redds, and this is just making it worse. The sad thing is that Brian is the one who preaches the most about fishing redds. He's just reigniting a flame that he put out.
i also love it how brian posted pics of big fish over the weekend and got crap for it, and now he does it again just a few days later. your like a kid, you never learn from your mistakes...

It's much more important.
The tenor of this board has certainly changed this past year. Go back and revisit older reports from '07 and '08 where many, not all, of the forum members posted and praised each other for glory/hero pics. I admit to complimenting others, too...How all that has changed with the dedicated effort and direction of PCT and board members posts/willingness to educate for the good of PC.
Too bad all this has come on the eve and day of hopefully a momentous occasion for celebration -- PC regulation change.

Again, the issue is doing it now and the ramifications of it right now, as spawn goes into full swing. I am all for showing pics and do it myself during the year. Let's respect the stream during it's most critical period of the year. With stocking no longer occuring it's now a most important issue. I feel like we're getting to the point of wearing the issue out. Let's talk about the regs change.
The best thing EVERYONE should do ,who has 2 cents to add to this topic would be to come to my redds 101 class .I walk the creek and educate others on the entire spawn process. What the fish are doing before they get up on their redds all the way through the recover stage.I also show you what type of water you can fish that will not interfear with the spawing trout.I dont know everything and I always have room to learn more. I know we can learn from each other...
there is one reason and one reason only why i posted pics a second time. i wasnt going to post them at all, but then i did, i am not going to say why i did it, but there was a reason behind it all. there are a few that know why i did it and thats where it will end. so thats that, it happened, the pics got posted, no fished died in the making of those photos, and i can say it wont happen again.
hey mx19, u know that those that are on here giving their 2 cents wont show up. they never do, but already told u that ill be there as long as it isnt past jan 4th when i go into surgery. before then i am there. i am always up for learning more.
On earth there are DOers and SAYers, what side are u on?

Wow-it never ends during spawning season! We thought (hoped) we were getting beyond this, but obviously not. PCT has led the way in addressing so many issues that are bringing the fishery down; now we have picture posting to add to the pile. Its common sense that reports of big fish and lots of pictures are going to increase pressure and that angers people, but so would a moratorium on such posts. Closing the season between December and February has been done before, but it is not another regulatory battle that we want to take on-its currently off our table.
We have made our recommendations repeatedly to avoid the active spawners and redds and we've posted the signs. Fish if you want to, but do so carefully. Instead of posting pictures, complete the angler surveys on line or at the boxes-those records will definitely benefit the fish and eventual recovery of the fishery.
Okay, I'm wading in here... and I'll watch where I step.
Bob, you hit the "issue" respectfully on the head. Fishing etiquette and best practices should be employed no matter what water you fish, especially in this modern world of grossly depleting fish habitats. Nobody wants their home waters overrun with, as Bob points out, with "uninformed" anglers. Too much hard work, volunteered time and mind share went into cleanup and the current proposed regulations on Putah Creek. Hopefully, as you read this, those regs have passed successfully. Everyone that considers the Putah as "home water" knows what's right, and what's wrong, because you more than likely have an emotional attachment to those waters, and respect others who fish it. Just ask Bono.
Listen we all love showing off our catch. I myself have displayed a fish or two on this board, and have revealed the rigging necessary to catch these kinds of fish. I'm in the fish business, so helping people get on the water is my job. But, setting up people on spawning fish habitat is taboo to me.
As many of you have already mentioned, let's not post pics of spawners caught in Putah Creek. It sends a definite message to all that its time to go fish! Better yet, I agree that this creek should be closed to all fishing during spawning season, as in some tribs in the Eastern Sierras. It keeps these types of flareups at a minimum, not to mention the fishery healthy and prolific. There's plenty of other waters to fish during this time of year.
Closing the season may be an eventual option, but, remember, the Creek is under evaluation as a Wild Trout water, and such a change would have to be warranted as part of the management plan developed by Heritage and Wild Trout. One reason that the reg change went so smoothly is we had the support of DFG's staff. An attempt now would be unwise and would be fought by some of the same folks that supported C/R-just look at what happened when NCCFFF tried to get the American closed temporarily to protect spawning steelhead at low flows last year-FGC rejected it.
PS-the reg change was passed.

I ran into Brian on the creek this afternoon and we had a good discussion. He understands why we don't want photos posted and I know why he did it. I've known him long enough that if he says it won't happen again, I'll take his word. This is a good day for the creek with the reg change, so let us end today on a high note and put this behind us.

thanks jt, its true its not important its behind us now. it happened, and its done and over with, and it wont happen again.
hey mx19, do u think the date might be past jan 4th. when i was out yesterday there was definitely a lot more activity between building, chasing as well as spawing near and around redds than there was just 2 days prior. i want to make it, but wont if its after the 4th.

I have not been to the creek in a couple weeks.next trip up north(trinity) , I will swing by and take a good look. Most likley it will be after the first of the year.with Xmas and new years holidays people are pretty busy and a class on the creek would turn out a low number of people .
well crap, i can keep u posted on how it looks, right now a crap load of redds, not a lot of fish on them, but definitely more than on tues, tues there was 3 active redds in the areas that i checked out, thursday there was 8 active redds, well if its after the new yr, ill do my best, but before i am game. maybe a few days before christmas. just an idea.
Off to the AR I go to hopefully intecept some on comming steelhead. maybe tomorrow too.
