What is your favorite combination when using a dropper. I like to use a red X-Tend Abody Midge on top with a hare's ear as the dropper. I think the red attracts the fish. I get most of my fish on the dropper. Good Fishing to all.
I probably should make this its own topic, (rather than post it on the yuba river one). I am thinking about trying my hand at steelhead this winter...any suggestions? I am thinking about heading out to the yuba this saterday, but I have never had that great of luck out there, I have only fished it a...
I thought this may be interesting topic. The question is what 5 dryflys and what 5 wets would you use if those were the only 10 you could use in putah creek? Any of you guys ever stop and pickup some fly's at the winter's store? I got a few red midges last weekend and everyone single one of them startin...
After reading your greats posts practically every day for a couple of years now, I am finally going to fish Putah with a friend on Thursday. Any suggestions for a newbie to this area? I believe there are five major areas to park, but any pointers on where to start and a coupl...
I have been fishing Cache Creek off of Hwy 16 a lot this Fall. Pretty much all I catch are a fairly dark colored greenish fish that look very much like trout, but aren't. Their body type and fins do strongly resemble trout. They prefer the more still water holes....
Has anyone ever fished the Arroyo Seco, below the footbridge? The regs say it opens December 1st.
Above the footbridge, 3.5 miles upstream of the parking lot, is open for fishing during the summer. I went hiking there a few summers ago and brought a rod in my pack, i...
I fished behind the Resort for two days this weekend and caught nothing! I got some good hits from some smaller trout using Blue Dunns. I actually saw a small greyish fly buzz across the water and get taken down by a small trout. My fly looks much like the real fly. They were jum...
I caught and landed my biggest fish yet! A 21" Brown that must of gone for at least 4-5 punds maybe a little more (this maight be small to others, but for me it was my 15 minutes of fame!). I caught him in Almanore on a crawler, yes, I was using a spinner setup and not my fly rod, but I like to fish light and...
Im a novice when it comes to knowing when and where fish spawn and that seems to be a concern on this page for this time of year. So a few questions are what kind of water and or bedding on the bottom does this occure (also areas on the creek to avoid). Also Ive caught some rainbows that are a real bright...
Hit the creek with my brother from 8am to 12am. only managed 1 fish at about 10inches. saw alot of what looked like pre-spawn behavior so we stayed away from that area. the creeks lookin really pretty now, it was great to finally get out again.
Good luck everybody, Clayton
Went out today from 8-430. Started out down by access 3, didn't have any luck. Moved up below th resort just above the fast water. There were 10 to 12 fish in the 20+ range just setting in the riffle. I tried everything I had, dries, nymphs. They look, but no takers. They would occassionally hit on t...
Fished today hooked and landed a rainbow 24inches long. It was very skinny and did not fight at all I think it already spawned, it reminded me of a spawned out steelhead. Do the fish typically spawn now or is this one just early.

fished nearly 6 hours saturday and i will say putah kicked my butt, been doin pretty decent lately and only managed 2 12 inch wild bows yesterday, think i am having a little trouble adjusting to the winter flows, seems like most spots are just too shallow to hold fish, good example is the riffle ar...
I am trying to decide my next destination, possibly this coming weekend, and was looking at the clavey river, tuolumne river, or the middle fork san joaquin, any opinions on these spots, i have been reading up on the middle fork san jauquin and apparently you can get the ol sierra grand slam in there, ra...
I was thinking of heading to the trinity river thiis weekend or next and was wondering if there is any info. on spots to fish and what to expect since i have never fishid this river. was thinking of trying some of the upper parts of the river, hoping that its not to big of water to cover on foot. any info would...
I was up at the Silver Fork yesterday, and while standing is a pool, noticed the largest rainbow I have seen in that river, about 18 in long. It was only about 10 ft away and in less than a foot of water. I thought perhaps it was spawning, but a friend, who is much more knowledgable about fish th...
Went into my closet and found that my cat had chewed and snapped my flyline on both of my rods. I guess thats what I get for being lazy and not putting them away. They are both wf 6 floating lines and are are cut about 4 feet from where the leader attaches. Question is this repairable or do I need to but new...
Played hookie from house duties today and headed up to the creek arriving just after noon. Geared up and started fishing a section below the old caretakers trailer (seems there was a fire there and the trailer is gone now). I had a couple of grabs and landed 1 fish around 12" or so on a #18 red midge. I reali...
I just checked the flows, and they appear to have jumped from 77 cfs to 590 cfs in a period of an hour. A change like that can put a serious damper on the fishing. If true, why would they change the flows so quickly? The glory hole couldn't be spilling over yet.
Last Thurs afternoon/eve I fished Putah with my buddy Ricky aka "Ricardo" Lopez at access #3.Ricky got there late and only was able to fish about an hour, but I was able to get about 3 hours of quality fish time. With the low flows I decided to start off with very small flies but managed only one fish within...
Went out in the afternoon/evening with a friend of mine in the canoe. Took it up below the dam, the water is really low, btw. Caught several on small woolly buggers, (color scheme is a secret) with a zug bug dropper, one of the best days I have had in a long time. Caught 1 over 20 and real...
Hi everybody:
This is my 1st posting to the forum. A little background on me:
My username indicates that most of the time I spend surf casting big topwater lures for stripers, and pulling out the 10 weight on the rare occasions where the Pacific Ocean is calm enough and the fi...
When I cant get up to the creek to fish because of lesser important things like school, and yard work and so on (J/k), I really enjoy looking at the photos. In a way they kinda bring me to the creek even when I cant be there. So if you have any new one's could you post them because like I said I really enjoy them a...
I recently fished putah with a freind who was bait fishing, yeah i know bait fishin is a terrible thang but anyways. He caught several small what i beleive was a type of sculpin, looked alot like a sal****er "bullhead". So i was thinking that a large streamer that resembled these may be a good choice to us...
Are the really jumping 100 or so cfps then dropping back down every couple of days, or is the system messing up? IT would not be the first time the system messed up, but then if they are working on the damn that could mess it up as well. If this is really happening, how does dramatic changes lik...
The flows appear to have dropped dramatically today based on the chart (if reported flows are accurate - - I know that sometimes these are not accurate). Anyone fish this afternoon? How do drops of this magnitude impact the fishing?
i think the extreme changes in flows are making for poor fishing. any opinions on this ? I fished all day today and only managed 6 fish landed, average length was 12 inches, all came on red san juan worm and a black leech.
Fished today creek was very low, looked like a river at tidewater when the tide was out all the rocks were sticking out with wet moss all over them. Anyways landed a few fish but was a frustrating day. I lost every fish that had any size to it, I lose more fish on Putah creek than any other place that I fish....
Hello all,
I'm a newbie and I noticed on your posts that some of you use a dry-dropper rig. Can anyone explain that to me with the lengths of all intervals and where to put the splitshots?
I was also on another site looking up some Nymphing techniques and I found this: http://www.napav...
