I stopped by the creek for about an hour in the morning. I had to meet up with a group from school to work on a project. I figured that I couldn't waste the trip to Davis on the weekend without stopping at the creek. I hooked three fish but landed none. I had one fish, about 19", ten...
My son is a beginner fly fisher. We want to come to Putah Creek. What kind of flies does he need and where can we get them? Can he fish from the side? Also, someone told me that the creek is too high to fish now. Is that true?

I've seen lots of top water action during the summer months right before you get to the island. I've fished it a few times and haven't had so much as a lick.
I would fish it, get nothing, and a bait and chuck guy would throw his in and pull out a trout. How frustrating!
Has anyone had...
Be careful out there, it's FRIDAY the 13th. So, today I wont go near the water or my equipment for fear of jinxing it, but ill walk under a ladder or cross a black cats path. Scary stuff!!! So if you don't catch anything don't cry about it, I warned you!!!
Spent a day floating the Lower Sac and a couple half days on the Upper Sac. Lower Sac, as usual was absolutely tremendous! Had to adjust to setting the hook at such deep depths (this took longer than I would like to admit with me losing a few solid strikes), but once I got in the groove it was bi...
I use a 3.5 pound 6x tippet and Ive had two fish break me off twice. The fish were in the 20 inch range, but I figure that should be strong enough. So my questions are...
What size tippet do you guys use when nymphing putah?
Do you think that i may possibly have too much tension on my line whe...
Went out today hoping the overcast skies, cool weather and chance of rain would pay off and I would have to say it was one of my best days on the creek.
Went down by access #5. On the far side of the island, caught 3 in the fast water. 10,12,14 all 'bows., using PT flahbacks and hares ears. Then when I was hea...
I was wondering if anybody has ever fished in Yellow Creek by Lake Almanor. I have a place up there, but that is one the few streams I havent checked out yet. Just wondering if it is good.
Went out this morning. Hooked a nice size fish up under some branches. As the fish went downstream, so did 5 or 6 otters. Needless to say, didn't land the fish or see anymore action after that.
Hi All,
It's been a while since I posted because it has been a while since I've had the opportunity to get up to Putah from San Jose. I went up last week for a few days. Did not have much luck but tied into a Putah hog in the 20 inch range I fought for a while. At first it seemed small and was coming along but it...
I really have been wanting to catch a brown on putah, was wondering if anyone might suggest some spots that i might try. Do they preffere different type of water then bows? I saw a big one rise three times in the same place about a month ago it was at least 25 inches and very very fat, tossed everything i had a...
since this is really my first year of fishing putah regularly, i was curious if you find the fish alot more "spooky" in the low water, do you think you should approach fish from down stream? do you find it neccasary to queitly approach your fishing area and keep a low profile? do you find yourself snagged...
I have been in the area for two years now and fishing Putah for one. Has there ever been or will there be a time when Putah might become a year-round fly-fishing only creek. I would like to know how many people might be interested in forming some sort of organization that could lobby this cause and t...
Had the day off yesterday and made a quick run up to the N Fork of Stanislaus just for the day. Had a pretty good day fishing around the Sourgrass access point. The morning started slow, but then I caught a couple wild rainbows about 8 inches and then came into a group of obvious planters.&nb...
Has anyone fished for bass from around winters down to stevensons bridge in the last few years? I used to do REALLY good for both smallmouth and largemouths down there. buth thqat was about 12 years ago. stopped and checked out a few spots on the way home today, looks pretty "fishy". Im thinkin about flo...
Yeah I know this topic has nothing to do with Putah creek fish reports...but its my website and I can do what I want!!Anyway If anybody out there is interested in possibly trading a guided trip or class on the mighty Putah creek for access of a day of hunting dove, quail, pig, pheasant deer,turkey...
I hear the reports and have seen people catch the big ones, but all I could catch were a 6 (if it was even that) and and an 11 incher. I was impressed however, because I wasnt expecting much since my parents have a place on lake Almanor where there are over 100 lakes and 1000 miles of river and st...
I made it out to the creek one last time Tuesday before starting school again for the Fall. I landed a couple of nice fish and lost a few, one of which broke me off. I landed five between 10-12", one 16"er, and one 18"er. Most were landed on a midge pattern, though a...
Fished the area around the bridge today and landed 5 fish from 6" to about 16". I hooked a very large fish that looked to be at least 22" to 24" that i fought for a few mins then took off downstream and tangled me around a boulder and log and snapped off. That fish pretty much did wh...
I am planning a upcoming weekend trip to the upper Rouge and was wondering if anyone would like to come along. There is a place to camp right on the river a few miles downstream of the dam. I've talked to guys who have been up there and they report fishing is excellent right now with multiple hook-up...
Hey yall,
Been a while since I posted. I'm drifting the lower Sac next Sunday and Monday. I actually have set up a guide, but wanted to know if anyone here has any pointers etc. They have suggested a 6 wt rod, however the 6 rods that I have are all 5 wt. Is there really t...
Just got back from Idaho, fishing the north fork of the clear water river. My buddie and I go up there a couple of times a year. It's strictly west slope cutthroat and bull trout. Lots of them. In the summer, its 100 % dry fly and in the late summer through fall its 50/50 drys and nymphs. There are a number of n...
I was out that creek last saterday with a friend of mine, his first trip out on the creek. Did pretty well, 6 landed, from 8 in to 16 in all natives, and countless hook ups and strikes. Anyway, as we were walking above access 2 and later, above the capground by the damn, we both decided t...
Has anyone ever noticed that Putah is listed on the steelhead card and all rainbows over 16" are considered steelhead ?!? This strikes me as very odd, especially when F&G stocks rainbows in the creek that are somtimes pushing the 17" range. Am I really supposed to call those 1...
Made another day trip (wake up at 4:30, on the river by 8, back in the car by 5) up to the Middle Fork of the Stanislaus. Last time I fished the North Fork.
I particularly like the Middle Fork because it is such as classic small stream with really defined characteristics (textbook drop dow...
I've made two trips to the creek this month and got skunked both times. I fished #5 over the island beneath the storm pipe and above the bridge at the north end of the campground. I have been drifting wd 40s, fox pupas, zebra heads and pheasant tails all small size 22 except the fox. I gotta figure I am not ge...
Has anyone heard any reports about the half-pounders on the American? A little over a month ago I heard they were in the river, but I haven't heard anything since then.
