Got my butt kicked by the creek today.  Wheewwwweeee!  Cold cold cold and it only seemed to get colder.  Spawners and redds everywhere.  Very cool to see, and watch your step.  Small olive mays and midges, some were large too.  I dunno where the bite went but I only saw a couple rises today also which might mean their getting moody?doh

like i said cappy as you know those waders are a lil tight but ill manage worming into them with something else, not just my underpants, i might double up on socks too.

i patched the hell outta the waders last night and today with aquaseal. i might have put just a tad bit more one that what i needed in some areas but guess what. I KNOW THAT IT WONT LEAK. i hope. slowly but surely ill get them fixed. and by that time it will be spring and ill put them up for the summer till i need them in the fall again. but hey they will keep me warm for now. and i can go above the crotch area now. so deeper i go to get those pigs. HARD CORE NOW.

I was due for a good skunkin.  The more days you put in the more skunks you receive.  I took it like a man because I saw a huge bobcat and got to see most of the holes I wanted to fish today and there were fish in them.  Just couldn't get one.

hey cole what type of flies was you using and what was there size.

right now you cant go wrong with an egg midge dropper or fox pupah midge dropper. midge is really kickin some fishies butts right now. well in my mind that is. its what has been workin since day one. and all my fish that i have caught from as small as 8" up to the 24" all have been on midges of some sort. ofcourse except for the day i blasted 50+ fish with my black woolly bugger. that was fun.

just keep hittin it. trust me i am still new to fly fishing and putah, i have only been fishing putah since august 5th, some days it humbles the hell out of me, but some days i do awsome. i am no expert at putah. but my knowledge of how to fish it is gettin way up there.

i still have no idea the hatches and bugs and fly names but hey if i am catchin fish does it really matter. I DONT THINK SO.

COLD!  I'm down with that, it was gorgeous, but wicked cold. The kind of cold that when the wind blew down from Monticello your back seizes. Had a new pair of underarmor for under the waders, still almost not enough.

Good to see you Cappy! You too, Otter!

It was slow, but I've got no gripes. I went 3 for 5. (to hand/ on), I worked hard for it though.  set out to fish some new water today (at least new to me). Saw cappy at 9am, he was locked and loaded ... looked like he'd been there since dawn.  I worked about 400 yards up from Cappy.

Stayed in the water til just after 1pm.  3:5 to show for it. 14-17". Took me over 30 minutes to get back to my car. Ran into and met Otter (good guy) on trip back to car. Cold and tired. Had to nap before driving home, but a good day out.

Cheers guys,

Ed

glad you made it out there ed. and glad you landed a few. so now you are 2-3, 1 day no fish then 2 consecutive days with fish landed. keep up that streak bro. i know me and cappy go back and forth. one day he will land the fish and i wont get diddly, the next it will be my day with him in the gutter all day. you to both just had good days so i hope the luck keeps going for me and my boss on tuesday.

got him pickin up a cheap pair of caddis breathables and caddis wading shoes. he dont get out much so dont need to spend much. hope they work. ill tell him to keep the receipt. i just want him to be able to fish other spots than the bridge which hi did good at for his first time out. but i want to get him on bigger badder fish. so got to get waders.

ya dont even talk to me about the cold, i couldnt move my ring and pinky finger on the left hand that strips the line last time i was out. couldnt tie could feel, until the sun popped out. then i warmed up. hopin i can fit a pair of something under my waders than just underwear. man ill need it out there.

good job ed keep up the good work.

Thanks BC!  I've learned a lot the last month or so!  Hacking away on the water has been the best, and every tid bit I pick up from each of you helps too!

I can't believe the psychological effects of getting into some natives with size. It's pure juice. Stoked!

Putah is a great place, but not for anybody who thinks they'll master it straight away!

All of the talk of snagging and poaching has been a real bummer latley!  Every time I get out recently, I can't help but think how lucky we are to have a place like this.

Folks that don't play by the rules, just don't understand or care how really special this place is!

thanks again B.

Ed

any time ed. you got my number so anytime during the week you wanna put our to minds together and go tackle putah you just let me know. i usually have tuesday fridays or thursday fridays. either way hit me up some time. and we shall do the damn thing.

this is a special place and i am so glad that i found it. i would probably still be fishin the carson or fish at the wall at nimbus, this place really puts me in my place and gives me a challange every so often which i love. everytime i drive home from this place i am spell bounded by either catchin fish or not catching and seeing what i can due next week to better my odds. as soon as i get those waders off i am already starting to itch from putah fever. its like crack i cant stop.

I LOVE IT.

let me know ed.

brian

ps and as far as this site goes and for everyone that i have had the pleasure in meeting you are the most upstanding individuals that i have ever come into contact with. your morals and standards, and just plain respect for yourselfs, others and dont forget about putah, are way beyond the reach of most people out there. i am glad to be associated with such a great people and such and awsome board.

cant wait till tuesday. hehehehe

Brian I am glad to hear you're so stoked to fish.  It is the thing I love.  I've been doing Putah for awhile so those slow days are acceptable because I know how it can be.  I must give respect to Putah in that regard, it keeps you humble but it also keeps you sharp.  There's no better place to tune up skills before you go somewhere else to fish.  If I was on my toes I may have caught one yesterday, and the time before that I only had one decent strike too.  You get caught sleeping and boom, skunked.   As far as flies I am working out some good little may patterns for this winter.  Mostly 18-22.  Mercer's trigger nymph, tiny/olive and a loop wing RS2.  Something I call a raider midge that's silver and black thread with a single strand of pearl crystal flash as a bubble trail.

Good job out there Lahonton Ed. That is a good idea walking the creek. That is the best way to find the secret spots. I have been fishing the creek for a while and I am still finding spots that hold fish. Like you said the creek is always changing. The fish are constantly moving depending on flows. A slot between any two large rocks deserves a few casts. The fishing for me was slow until about 2 when a large hatch of midges started. Landed three and hooked a bunch more. It really is tough to keep those jumping fish on with a size 22 midge.

In the morning the fish were just GOIN OFF..... Pretty sure they were slamming caddis emergers. I also met Darra today, Nice to meet ya kid.
