Fishing Strategy: How Do You Cover Water?

After reading all of the recent reports, I have started thinking more about the importance of fishing strategy, then say fly selection or technique (e.g., high-sticking).  It seems like many of you cover a large amount of water, while others concentrate on specific areas.  That said, I wonder what strategy is most productive:  1) cover as much water as possible; or 2) cover a small area or specific location, but fish it hard (e.g., lots of fly changes/depth adjustments).  I have been focusing on No. 2 with limited success.  As such, I am thinking I might need to switch it up and try to cover more water.

Some days I do alot of walking and driving up and down the river to fish alot of different spots, Sometimes i"ll fish one spot for several hours, depends on my mood. Lately I have found it best to find good spots and fish them very thourghly. Afster time you'll find the consistant producing spots and then you can concentrate on those areas without wasting alot of time fishing unproductive area's. Also do alot of depth, and fly changes if needed. When you do find those consistant producing spots I'd keep it quit.

ill have to agree with captain here. we did this very well yesterday. hit the main spots where we knew fish were holding, used different flies, depths, amount of shot and so on. we would fish that hard and thurough, then move on to our second best spot and so on. we did move around a lil bit during the after noon time just so find someother good spots, and well we should have just stayed at the original two. but to what captain said. right to the T. couldnt have said it any better.

Fishing isnt about catching fish, its not about who caught the most, or who caught the biggest, its about the experience that you have on the water, and the life long bonds you make with others on the journey to becoming a better person inside.

I usually don't have much time to fish, so I fish smaller areas pretty hard.  I know a quite a few spots that produce during certain times of the year and focus on those spots.  One thing I will say, if you're not catching fish, CHANGE.  You can change the depth of your flies, your weight, your flies, or your location.  I usually change in that order.  If I had more time I would change my location more often, but with my schedule that won't happen any time soon.
