I am acting on a request from a few people who wanted a little more info about the spawners in Putah, and I felt it was a good time as well because it's that time of year.I'm sorry this may be a little redundant for some of you, especially the senior members of this site. The spawn usually starts around late Nov and lasts through Feb-ish.They are usually pretty easy to spot as they are in water from 8" deep to 3 feet deep and they tend to chase each other around alot. The tail-outs of pools where there is sufficient flows and clean gravel are favorite areas.Look for semi-circular areas in the gravel that are clean from silt and debris, these are the nests or redds. Please stay clear of these areas do not wade through them for obvious reasons. And lastly Try not to fish for these reproducers because being harrassed can stress these fish enough that they cannot reproduce or may even after being released die.I see dead spawners every single year and it makes me sick ,to me this is no different than poaching. We most likely will be posting a majority of these sites with permanent well made signs with the help of the DFG.Hope this info helps a little and if any of you still have questions please feel free to call me and maybe I can help. hey bono...will the signs be at the waters edge or at the road or access.....I am very pleased to here the creek is getting some signage for the winter spawn...do they need any donations or a sign maker who's a putah regular...mabe you could trade with him...let me know
there has been a drop in the number or redds over the last five+ years..I dont fish the creek from mid nov till well after the first of the year...If i do fish it I target the small fish and avoid all site fishing...I would suggest all of the faith full putah creek members do the same...
Another reason I dont fish this time of the year is the mood it puts me in when I see people targetting these fish...plus its steelhead season...I will take 1 steelie over 500 putah bows...
just putting in my 2 cents

p.s. thank you for doing what you do for the creek...
Great cartoon, Steve ... good visual learner here.
I'd be glad to lend some cash and/or elbow grease to help...Although I'd love to see some of Gov. Pump 'U' Ups banquet budget spent on this as well!
There's plenty of folks who'll help here, just shout! I can tell you know that.

Thanks for the positive feedback everyone!Right now it looks like the Dept Fish and Game will be making and placing the signs as they have the $$$ to do so.I'm not positive of the actual site placement but I would guess that it will be near the site not near the road. When this Putah non-profit is officially up and running you all will be the first to know and when volunteers for letterwriting/fundraising/monitoring ect ect are needed I know the members of this site will be at the forefront. Thanks again, Bono
I'll do anything I can to help. Problem is this.....Were dealing with a government agency and i will be highly surprised if it takes less then a few years to post signs, I have absolutly no faith what so ever in any government agency to get anything done in a timely fashion. Just my opinion.
