So I needed a break from some of the studying I have been doing lately, so I sat down at the bench I wasn't looking at coming up with anything in particular, but here are a few that I came up with.
#1 - Caddis Emerger... or that's what I am going to call it. #2 - Midge #3 - Zebra Midge #4 - My attempt at a WD-40 #5 - Emerging Pheasant tail... again, or that's what I am calling it
Ok, back to the books for me. Thanks for letting me get my fix fellas.
Those are all great flies. I love tying and have been thinking about PT variations lately. The WD40 is good as well. Hey what camera do you use? I have maybe 300 flies shot on my Canon elph. Shot them on the macro setting with white poster board behind them. It took me awhile but then some have come out great.
hey wt those are some really good patterns, i havent tied any yet, buy all my flies, and if i seen some of those in a store id put them in my arrsenal for putah flies, especially the midges and wd-40

Nice post and nice flies, WT. I'm thinking about starting tying soon, seems like an excellent quick fix when you can't hit the water...
Sorry for the newbie question, but your Caddis Emerger, do you fish it like a dry, or in the film, or weighted like a nymph? I had some success for a few weeks about a month ago with small wild bows in shallow riffles with E/C Caddis dries #16 and 18, looks like similar profile.
Cole- The camera is a Canon elph, and I used the macro mode. It takes a good picture. I have also had a hard time trying to figure out the best way to shot some of my flies. Using the flash is nice, but I think ideal would be to have a lot of light set up around the fly. I have also found that different backgrounds make a huge difference. For example when I shot that caddis emerger I found that I needed a gray background other wise part of the fly disappeared. I have also been thinking up PT variations, I will try and post more when I think them up. Let me know what you come up with anything interesting.
Bugger- I would fish that Caddis Emerger more as a wet on the swing. I would probably also have another fly about 12 - 18 inches behind it as well. Its very similar to an Elk hair caddis... in fact the only real difference is that the Elk Hair caddis has hackle and this emerger pattern does not, and substutes some anton out of the butt end and under the wing to mimic the shuck.
You guys thinking about tying should do it. The bugs you hopefully are using this time of year at Putah are very easy to tie and effective all year. Most of them anyways. You could get set up fairly decent to start. I wouldn't get a starter kit however. Too many things you don't need. Ask a "knowledgable" person at the shop what materials you want based on the flies you tie. A vise, some scissors and thread and you'll soon be wasting too many hours at the bench. Let me see if I can load a couple. One is NOT a putah fly the other could be.....
Those are nice cole, I especially like that zebra midge. I don't tie yet but am looking into it. I tied a zebra midge type pattern on a pair of foreceps the other day, Just used some thread I had around the house. Actually i think it has a chance of working.
that midge will work great on putah. make as many of those as you can. they will kick some ars all yr

Nice flies and nice pictures, Cole. Thanks for sharing guys. I'm sure there's a bunch of patterns that are easy to tie and do great on putah. I saw videos of guys tying on YouTube, the first time I see someone doing it. Loved it. I got to start shopping for a couple books and a vise...
Bugger- I see. Then yes I would fish it the same way you fish the E/C Caddis. Thanks for those thinks I have never seen that fly and will have to give it a try.
Also if you're looking for a good, cheap vice check out the post about selecting a vice, there a link there to cabelas that has a good vice. I love tying and find it's only making me a better fisherman
Thanks guys. It's fun stuff and while your sitting there tying you just zone out on future fishing trips or past ones. It's another way to sit there and think about fishing for awhile. That zebra midge has a pearl glass bead I got at the craft store. Now the companies sell those in lots of colors at the fly shop and I just laugh because I get a couple thousand for 1.25 and there's all kinds of great colors too. Think about matching a Fox pupae body with the exact same color bead instead of tungsten. Incredibly effective! As far as a fly swap I usually trade when I meet a fellow tyer at the fishing hole.
