Decided to head up today even though we just got a nice flow bump to 600. As expected, a tough day of fishing, although I managed one fat 18 incher to hand and a few more takedowns to boot. What was working was 6x and 7x tippet (water's high but gin clear), big dark colored flies, and lots of shot fished in sof...
Hi my name is John and I'm new to this site and also fly fishing. I'm taking casting lessons soon in sac. I'm looking for a good stater rod and reel, and also any tips for a beginner.
I was fishing at access 5 today and my friend spotted a mountain lion on the island. Just a friendly reminder that we fish in their backyard not ours.

Hey Bob, I think this pattern is pretty easy to duplicate. The Lembroughton's will carry on! I need to trim the wings slightly shorter on the next one, this was the experimental first tie. Packrat
names joe im new to fly fishing and in the process of learning. i have no associates that fly fish so i have little help other than what i read online. I was just wondering if anyones got tips on fishing putah creek. Specifically fly selection. Thanks
I was thinking of heading out to Putah or Yuba rather than doing the Davis Picnic Day tradition. I'd rather drink a few beers on a peaceful river than in a crowded bar during the day. The Yuba's rainy blowout hopefully should be gone by now (hopefully!).
Hello all, This looks like a great community, lots of good info here - keep up the good work! I'm a beginning fly fisher, and brand new to Putah Creek. I've read through the forums a bit, including the posts on ettiquette, the angler surveys, etc so I just wanted to say hello and ask if anyone had some fri...
I want to take some of the vets from the pathway home in Yountville fly fishing-- for starters up to Putah Creek. i am needing to get some help with boots and waders or an old vest that someone would loan or give to me for the express use of any men that want to learn to fly fish from the pathway home. And yes I a...
My brother is visiting in early May for a week and is a big bass fisherman. We're planning on exploring the Delta, but I don't have much expereince with that water. I'd like to hire a guide for a day or two, but my brother being a gear fisherman might complicate matters. Anyone know a Delta bass guide wh...
I am going to try the lower Yuba for the first time in a couple of weeks. Any advice would be appreciated. Weighted Rubber legs + nymph dropper a good strategy? Cheers, kb
Most the fish I have been seeing lately are bright silver or a little on the dark side. I landed a fish today that was bright red, and a little beat up. Not post spawn colored but full on sokeye red. (Pulled the fish out of a deep run at least 4') I have not seen fish on Putah spawn this late in the year but th...

Hey all, Anyone know if it's too early to fish the South Fork of the American along highway 50? I'm looking for a place to bring my girlfriend (a beginner fly fisher) where the fish are tiny and numerous but there's some dry fly action before the spring runoff. We did well at Putah this past weekend but we'...

So I was just reading the new edition of TU mag and there is a great article on golden trout in there. It got me wondering about true natives versus wild fish that are born into a river like Putah. How many species are from California? Curious to see some of your answers.
Friendly advice- always check for ticks after a visit to the PC. my wife was able to pull off MOST of my unwelcome passenger. I had to make a trip to the doctor's office to remove the rest. It also looks like the species that transmits Lyme Disease.
It took a cagey old vet, former Cy young winner to bring us up out the funk. Zito was topping out at 85 today. WTF? A 4 hitter at coor's field is damn hard to to. Last shutout there by any memorable pitcher was Roy Oswalt. The G's haven't started a season 0-4 since 1950 or something like that. 2 more and...
I hooked a silver otter today , I was fishing down around 4 today and hooked what must have been a 8 to 10 pd er All I know is I saw my indicator dip I set the hook, saw a silver flash going deep and heading accross and down stream taking lots of line and deep then turn back up streem swimming fast. Jacked me...
The fish frenzy party is over... Flows on the Lower Stan are up to 1300 cfs. 250 to 1300 in less than a week. The fish are probably now spread out all the way down to Oakdale. It was fun for three months though.
howdy all, first post here. I grew up in San Jose and fished Putah a bit when I was in High School and a couple times when I'd be back in town during college. I'd say I haven't been there since 1997 or so. Anyhoo, I will be in Davis next Wednesday night through sunday morning attending the Salmonid Restora...
For those that may be interested I will be hosted a steelhead trip at Kalum River Lodge on the Skeena River British Columbia. Dates are Aug 12th - Aug 19th, 6days, 7nights. This week is "THE PRIME" week on the Skeena in Aug. This is an even yr so all 5 species of salmon will be there, Pinks, Co...
Fished for about 4 hours, 2 of which were spent prospecting harder to get to areas. Anyone ever manage to catch one in rapids? I bet a lot of fish hold in these remote spots with almost no fishing access. Landed an 18-20 inch on a san juan worm work dropped below a #12 BH prince nymph. Picture attached. Hook...
Off color water and lots of hungry fish. Landed 6 today between 12 and 18 inches. Not a banner day but not bad either. Picked most of em up between the bridge and 2. I would say don't go too far downstream right now. Hot flies were red san juans, brassies, and olive military mays. Was wading up from guide hol...
