No New Posts Should I Go to Putah? (Preview) Putah Creek Fly Fishing 4 916

Hi folks.  I'm a new fly fisherman, just started last season, and a friend and I are planning to head up to Putah on 2/25.  Is that a bad idea?  I've been reading the threads here and I've seen some posts advising anglers to stay away from Putah until April 1st.  I understand that it's the tail end of the sp...

No New Posts Happy New Year! And some good news today! (Preview) Putah Creek Fly Fishing 7 1063

I was on the creek after work today and ran into our resident volunteer entomologist (bug scientist).  The good news is that DFG was patrolling the creek looking for violations.  Specifically looking for the clowns hand fishing!!  I have seen the local DFG more this year than in many many years!   It s...

No New Posts Trinity/ Lower Sac run (Preview) Other Rivers, Streams and Lakes 1 707

I got a chance to go up with a couple of customers and hit the winter run on the Trinity this past Thursday and then we followed up on Friday with a day on the Lower Sac.  The Trinity was gin clear and called for long drifts away from the boat.  There was no other traffic that we saw on the river between 2 boat...

No New Posts Tenkara on Putah Creek ? (Preview) Putah Creek Fly Fishing 9 1921

Hi All. Will a tenkara rod work ok for fishing on Putah? I've read that they are great nymphing rods and protect tippets very well. They seem to be gaining an almost cult like following with some people. What do you all think?   WF

No New Posts Tenkara Trout Fishing (Preview) Other Rivers, Streams and Lakes 12 1114

Well I finally went out and picked up a Tenkara rod.  I figured it would be fun to go out and fish the way some of my ancestors used to fish...  It is pretty fun going backwards!!  It is a combination of high sticking, dry flying, deep water fishing and emerger fishing all at once???  Anyways it is hard to ex...

No New Posts Getting back out there February 2013 (Preview) Putah Creek Fly Fishing 4 913

I grew up fishing Putah Creek with my Father. We spent many seasons fishing there and I have had some great fishing here over the years. Fast foward through college (when I never fished because I didn't have the time or desire) and I now have a huge yearning to get back out there and go fishing. I know it is...

Yuba Renga 2-1,2-2013   White tail and talons, above the river's way. Soaring and gliding.   Trouting with friends, some old, some new. The Yuba's bounty, we catch.   Fluid flow, full of wonder, My speckled friend rises.   Sloshing and casting, soggy socks, leaky waders. Along river's edge.   Ring of...

No New Posts Break ins (Preview) Other Rivers, Streams and Lakes 3 721

Just another reminder to be careful not to leave exposed gear in your car.  It's hard sometimes when you are fishing your way back home and only carry one rod to the river but you brought 3 for the trip.  Lucky nobody ripped me off on the same river but it could have easily happened.   Another nice spey ree...

Fished 6 hours yesterday on the Russian.  The water has a little green tint with about a foot of visability.  It is as high as I've fished it in the last few years.  No hookups for fishing  for 6 hours.  Very bright sun yesterday.

No New Posts iOS fishing log (Preview) Equipment and Product Reviews 0 3211

I've been looking around for a decent fishing log for the iPhone for a while now and I think I found it. It's called FishTales. It's obviously not fly fishing specific but it has some great features. You can enter fly patterns you use into your "tackle box" including photos. You can take pics...

No New Posts steelhead card (Preview) Rants and Raves 2 1668

I forgot all about reporting that to F & G for 2012. Just a freindly reminder.  In the 2012 regulatios they were "thinking" of adopting a policy that forbid a person from bying a steelhead report card for the following year if they did not turn in the previous years.  It's easy to do onlin...

No New Posts Fly Leader Update (Preview) Other Rivers, Streams and Lakes 0 616

Thanks for all of your help.  I've been tying leaders using the traditional blood knot.  About every third knot has been slipping.  Not sure why (I don't have the blood knot tying tool), but I did an internet search and one person suggested using an Albright knot.  Never heard of it before so I did a sea...

No New Posts Survey Problems and Colors (Preview) Putah Creek Fly Fishing 6 820

Tried to submit two surveys from my last two trips and am getting an error page every time. Anyone else having the same issue? Any problems on the website end? Also. Caught a parr today that was dark like a mature male spawner. Is this normal? I've had silver fish and dark fish to hand for the past few weeks...

No New Posts Steelhead fly leader formula (Preview) Other Rivers, Streams and Lakes 2 1916

In this day of upscale equipment and state of the art fly rods, vests, etc. I find myself getting a little upset.  Maybe its because I'm older, retired, and a cheap skate.  Anyway, I decided to start tying my own steelhead leaders.  I googled steelhead leader formula's and came up with formula's from 5...

The good.  Caught a few bright silver small fish on the creek today in a deep pool. No doubt from some clown who fought the fish to his death The ugly:Saw t...

Fished the Merced last weekend in the yearlong section above Foresta bridge; nary a bite all day. The Flows were at 200 and the river was gorgeous. Had kids with me so I wasn't wading too far from them so my fishing was limited. The kids got sick of casting their spinners so we spent most of the day teachin...

No New Posts Force Fins (Preview) A Little Shameless Promotion 3 3548

I know that some of you are die hard float tubers.  If you have not ever used force fins I suggest you try them.  They make all the difference in the world when in the tube. For the past year it has been near to impossible to find a pair a retail locations.  Recently I found out that force fins is going out of bu...

The whole river system is coffee colored. Cold Creek was flowing at 200 cfs today which pumped up the water level and dumped a ton of sediment in the water. Fishing was non existent from Cold Creek down. Ran into Steve today when he was checking out the spawn sites. Nice chatting with you. Next spawn clea...
