I just fished Baum Lake in Shasta county for the last three days. Tons of fish and crystal clear water. Even with all the rain. Had a lot of fun fishing in the snow.
Sounds like some of you have cabin fever??? Just get out there and have some fun!!! No need to argue... Winter fishing is tough, but just getting out on the rivers is fun!! Fish can be caught just bring big ass bright flies and big ass dark flies. Good luck out there!!!
Hello everyone, Was looking around and found this website :). Seems like most of the fly fisherman/woman here are from norcal. The question is, has anyone here ever fished Butte Creek up by Chico/Paradise? I am unsure if there are any river access points, because most of that land near chico is privat...

The DFG has released its EIR on hatchery supplements (planted fish). You can view it at http://www.dfg.ca.gov/news/pubnotice/hatchery/ Be forewarned that its several hundred pages of text, maps, tables. Chapter 4 and appendix K are good starting point. My quick distillation is that for PC, t...
Anybody have any experience with thomas & thomas rods. I am getting back into rod building and they have blanks readily available. Pretty similar prices as the z-axis. The finished rods on their website are sexy as hell, but that means little on the water. Probably start with some cheaper st...
Hit the Lower Yuba yesterday on a whim. The spring crowds are beginning already as there were 10 guys above the bridge. The half inch of rain from wednesday put only a slight tinge in the water, which was even lower than 10 days ago. My guess is that is reaching 700 CFS and must be at minimum allowable...
While on the road for work I scrapped together a full day on the South Platte. Cheeseman Canyon to be exact. 26 degrees. A bright day. Gin clear water. It was tough fishing. This little lady got hungry just before dark.
I've heard it said that older rods rated at say, 6 wt would be best paired with a modern 5 wt line. For example, I have an original Sage 6wt/7wt 9' rod (no model designation), would that best be matched with a 5 wt / 6 wt line? Is there a similar "rule" for reels? I could go through trial and er...
some time shortly after Christmas? Supposed to be nasty weather over next weekend but I could probably swing the 26th or 27th before the storms come in.

Hit the American this morning. Fished at Watt ave, only two other fisherman showed up at about 11:00am to play in the rain with me for zilch. I saw 3 fish zero grabs. About noon I took a trip up to the hatchery and the diversion gate is removed so the fish can go all the way to the dam, but the gate at the bottom o...
PCT wants to remind you that the angler survey reports are a primary source of information for DFG in its Wild Trout designation evaluation of PC. With their limited resources, the head of Heritage and Wild Trout says surveys are a big help to the process and he hopes level of participation by us fish...
After reading someone's report and all the negative responses about keeping quiet about the big fish being caught, I decided to fish Putah for the first time in a couple years... It is true, positive reports will bring more people to fish the creek just like myself... The creek really has seemed to tak...
You know those days on the Yuba when fish are rising all around you. And you try every fly in your box. And you know the fish are taking emergers by the way they are rising. This may be the solution......
Planning a trip with the fam to head up to nothern Idaho. Ive never been up there im wondering if anyone has any tips on some good rivers or streams. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
PCT is interested in finfing out if you have seen active spawners on the redds at the usual places. Much of the best areas appear to be weed choked and the one fish I saw today was finning up a cloud of silt every time she made a pass over the gravel-not a good sign. This is an informal follow up to last years SC...

Is anyone familiar with the original series of Abel TR reels? I've just picked up a used Abel Trout TR3, the current ones are supposed to be rated for 7 & 8 wt lines but in hand it looks more like a 5wt reel. Any thoughts on this? I'm hoping to scrape together a 7 wt rig and was planning on using th...

I am into fly fishing for only a couple of years now, I've done quite a bit of fishing on the east coast. While reading through the posts about staying away from the redds several members mentioned that there are plenty of other places to fish around here. I would love to hear about them, I know of Putah and...
Earlier this week three DFG biologists and their helicopter pilot were killed in an accident in Madera County. The California Association of Professional Scientists has established a memorial fund for the three Fish and Game employees and the pilot killed in Tuesday's crash. Checks can be sent...
Haven't seen any posts about anybody scoring some gear on Christmas. Just wondering if you've all been good boys and girls. Personally I got a nice fly box and a waterproof camera. Now I can prove to my wife that I actually catch fish.
as a few of you know, I'm a very beginning fly fisherman with a $20 4weight fly rod, I couldnt even tell you the name of it. Well I broke it fishing for striper again (about 2-3 pounds didnt weigh it but was 22 inches), and it isnt worth fixing. So that brings me to my questions. 1. What weight fly rod should I g...
