Some of the rivers have been blown out for much of this year, so I have had tons of fun fishing lakes. The lakes are pretty high as well. Using an intermediate camo line you can hook some of the wary fish. The wiggle tail works well on many lakes. There is a little lake that is the middle upper part of the Y...
It’s been a little dead around here on the boards. Its either people are catching fish and not posting, or the fishing just sucks. Lately its been all about the Shad and stripers. For me the stripers have been tough, the shad a little easier. But the flows and cold water are really putting a hurtin on t...
I have a slightly used TFO Mini Mag 8/10 3pc fly rod for sale. Used for a back up striper rod and is no longer needed. I was throwing a Rio 350gr striper line on it and it loved every foot of the 100ft of line, including some backing. Info on the rod: 8' 3pc 5.4oz rated 300-400gr lines and is a 8/10wt rod, salt w...
I just received a copy of the book on the complete history of English reelmaker Walter Dingley. If you collect old reels this is an absolute must have book.
So I was in Tahoe this past week at my timeshare and got out to do a little fishing. Checked out the Little Truckee but didn't fish it, flows are still way too high for my liking, over 600cfs. Fished the Big Truckee for a couple hours one afternoon and only caught a couple small ones on a caddis pattern. Flow...
I'd like to take a minute to rave about this guy that repaired my Thomas&Thomas rod recently. I tore a guide off and the others were wearing nice grooves into them so I decided it was time to get the rod rewrapped with new guides. Tough decision wether to send it in to have the factory do it or have it do...
You guys seem to have pretty inquiring minds. I was fishing the King's River in late March above the reseervoir. There were not any fish where I thought they should be, but we found one hole that was very productive. I pulled this fighter out and am a bit puzzled what strain of trout(?)- see below....
This is nuts. Please help out. If you wheel in CA you NEED to do this. Not only that, you NEED to pass this on and get more people to do it. (Actually, even if you don't wheel and just want to access to dirt roads in CA in Prius, you need to do this) Not gunna bore you with all the details, but here's the jist of i...
Got out to the creek for a few hours yesterday, hooked two, one nice out of the water leap, landed none. The creek is pretty darn difficult to fish right now. Saw the inflatable Kayaks caught up in debris above 3. Also spent hours drying out my Iphone, it was real easy to get up to my armpits in water that typ...
I've been working way too hard and have only been able to fish 6 days in California so far in 2011. Yesterday, it was time to get on the water, so I ran up to the Lower Yuba for the day to enjoy the 98 degree heat. Actually, being in the water all day, I barely noticed how hot it was until I hiked back down the ri...
I am in town next Friday with a fishing window of about 1-2 hours, assuming sundown at 8:30. Got interested in PC from a reference in Tim Palmer's Rivers of California. Have read many of the posts on this site and PCT; interesting, but looks like the fishery is still trying to come back with spotty fis...
If you are looking for four Lagoon inflatable kayaks, they are scattered along about a mile of the creek, starting about a mile below the bridge. Two are in the pool below a rapid, one with a life vest in it. Paddles are also scattered below this point-only saw two of those....Hope this helps somehow......
I had been waiting for the flows on the Middle Fork to go down so I decided to head up there this weekend. On the way ,crossed Lake Oreville, first time I've ever seen it full. About 20 miles up Hwy 162, I find the road is closed with no access to where we want to go. Time to pull out the DeLorme , there are a lot of...
I know its early but I want to try steelhead on the fly. What size rod and line size is good for steelhead? Also, what are some good rivers to give it a try this winter?
Threw caution to the flood water and heading into the canyons and a trib of the North Fork over the weekend. As expected the water level in the North fork was thundereding through the narrow flumes and pinch points making it extremely difficult to employ any particular style of fishing. Swinging str...
Ran up just for the day last weekend. Normally it is a trickle this time of year, but it was just a little on the low side, but still very fishable. Caught a few planters down at the bottom until that got a bit boring and then started to work my way up. From about a mile up, turned into all wild fish and had a ni...
We made our annual pilgimage to Rock Creek, outside of Missoula this past week. Despite very high water things did not dissapoint. The outfitter we have used for the last 8 years, John Perry Flyfishing, is excellent . . . some great guides. Our crew likes to whoop it up as well as fish, and that we did. ...
Had three very pleasant mornings on Spanish Creek in Quincy over the July 4, weekend. For the past three years I have made the four hour pilgrimage to the High Sierra "Hippy" Music Festival that is held in the fairgrounds but this year I decided to switch it up and bring a fly rod and a few selec...
Took the yearly Mantrip with my brothers , this year was West Virginia, fished the Potomic, Red Creek, Seneca Creek, Smoke Hole and a day trip to the Rapidan in Virginia. It was great to wet wade, do some sight fishing with dries and have easy to manuever flows. Between us we had a grand slam with Rainbows...
Givin the current conditions of most trout rivers and streams I've been able to keep my sanity by playing around with some bluegill. There a great flyrod gamefish, there not always easy they can be finicky as a spring creek trout, they fight hard, are plentifull, And I have a pond full of them practica...
Well, I haven't posted in a while... but I kept looking, and I thought I'd share my new favorite thing. Due to the conditions on our favorite rivers this spring, I too decided to exploit the warm water venues closer to home and started fishing for bass. Lots of new stuff to learn! It's harder and more tec...
Went exploring this weekend to see if I could catch the hex hatch. Got out to the water and saw a youngster hooked up on his first or second cast. He was cheating with a nightcrawler though. I made a few casts with my new camo intermediate line and was hooked up. It felt like a huge trout like maybe a 20&q...
With the big Sierra melt well and truly underway, what should be expected in terms of flow rates and how soon should we see a reduction in flow? Being new to Cali and not having witness a major snow event like this winter, it there any particular time frame when the waters are due to subside and how fast wi...
If you are like me and stuck in an office Monday through Friday and need to get a fishing hit to fill the empty void. I highly recommend the Podcast produced by Tom Rosenbauer which is sponsored by Orvis. It is an excellent production and provides tips, tricks, guests and experts covering all aspects of...
Hey all, I am not sure if any one reads this, but I figured I would take a stab. I am looking for a line to use on my 6 weight for fishing lakes in Northern Wisconsin in late August. The water will be warm, and the fish will be deep. i would say 20-25 feet. My question is, do I need a full sink line? If so, what...
