The U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives are currently negotiating a bill that would upset the balance of water distribution needed to protect the already threatened salmon fisheries of California and Oregon. If passed, this legislation would divert water badly needed by salmon and oth...
It's that time of year again: big fish are starting to move around in preparation for their annual ritual. Some sites already have fish and redds. Winter flows appear in place at 135 CFS already because of the drought. Hopefully, they will not drop below 100 CFS over the next four months. Let's all reso...
Hey all, Recent transplant to San Francisco and I have been waiting for the flows to drop to try out my nymphing skills on the Putah, which it looks like they finally have. Looking for pointers on when to hit the Putah to avoid the crowds. Are weekends a no-go? How many anglers on a typical fall Saturday?...
I just discovered a TV channel dedicated solely to fishing. It's the world fishing network (WFN). Although most of the programs are not focused on flyfishing (as you would expect), at least there are several of them on flyfishing. Unfortunately, I have Comcast and Comcast doesn't yet include...
I had a great time with guide Brian Clemens last Wednesday on the Yuba. It is rare that I ever leave the water satisfied; there's typically a feeling of "Just one more...." There were PLENTY of willing fish last Wednesday going nuts for Brian's particular hand crafted eggs. He not only kne...
Hi everyone, Trout Unlimited is having a nationwide contest so the competition is stiff. Once again it is a popular vote contest run through Facebook and this time each person can vote only once. The voting runs for one week beginning today and if you are so inclined, below are the instructions for v...
Into the flow dogwood and maple turn and churn. Even the moon quakes tonight. Rumbling thunder behind me. From my zen march I awake! The engineer's horn. Behind the veil, Casting caddis adrift in current, to no avail. Between the corduroy, rising to the caddis beat. I cast. Fish rise. Cane bent. Rele...
Hi all, I'm new to the forum but an avid fly angler. I am a graduate student here at UC Davis (equine veterinary student) hoping to become more familiar with the gem that is Putah Creek. I've fished it a number of times since I've lived in Davis with mediocre luck. I've been heading out to the Yuba quite oft...
I've never been fortunate to pull this off before. Caught these two twins at Access 3 yesterday on one cast. Made my day! I'm going to try a triple nymph rig now. Or maybe a hopper-copper-dropper.
I have the smaller Safe Passage sling pack and really like it. This is a steal at this price. Good through 10/12/14 midnight. The only downside that I have found is that they are not waterproof and so if you don't take care you will get your contents wet.
Hey all, I just moved to the area so I don't know the regulations... But I was curious when I saw a guy walking down the trail near the bridge with a shotgun. I asked him what he was looking for and he sheepishly said "birds". Seemed a little odd. Got a pic of his license plate just incase any funn...
With the lower flows, I can finally get into many of the stretches I love to fish on the Putah. Lots of 10-14" class fish to hand using tight line techniques and weighted flies. So much fun! They liked the size 18 tungsten bead head PT the most.... A few pale mayflies cam off ~ 1:30pm.
there seems to be a lot of bait fishing lately , yes I called dfg no they didnt make contact they always scoot before dfg shows up , next time I wont inform the pochers they are breaking the regs . I am just going to call dfg , These two guys had two to three fish on a stringer useing worms and cheese . Here is a pic...
Well the fall fishing season is in full swing. From the lakes to the rivers the fishing has been good to great. Went to Lake Davis and the fishing was pretty good for Clay (Iamamultitasker) and I. There weren't a lot of fish, but all the fish averaged about twenty inches. Have been hitting a few rive...
Earlier this year during the summer, someone asked question about floating the Creek at summertime flows. Since then, there have been two instances of fast water rescue on the Creek. The first occurred in September when three women tried to use paddleboard's to float the Creek and had to be rescued....
Putah South Canal is getting its annual cleanout of silt and weeds. Creek flows were dropped to 80 and are now at 100. The fast ramp down was a mistake which won't be repeated. Flows may bounce around for another week before reurning to fall levels
I've fished the creek a few times the last month. Surprised at how much trash was around. Found a bunch of large barbed hook rigs on yards of line. I think we all need to make a commitment to take a few handfuls out each visit. Beautiful place that needs a few more stewards.
Hi everyone, just wanted to pass along a warning to those who may turn into the North side of the road parking area at the bridge. The point at which the asphalt meets the dirt has eroded to the extent that in my compact , I had a tough time entering and exiting the lot as there are deep ruts in the earth and a dr...
There's a dark green full size pickup with a shell and lumber rack and tons of Fly-Fishing stickers on the back which has been parked under a big tree on the northwest side of the bridge? Sarah and I saw it yesterday and I was thinking it has been there a few days now--could someone have hiked in and gotten h...
I seem to have lost another fly box while fishing at access 5 . I think it may have floated down river as I looked for it today and did not see it . If found please let me know thanks . Richard from Napa 707 294-4738
Fished on 10/02 30 fish to hand, largest fish were caught on number 14 copper bead tan fox's caddis pupa, #20 zebra, mcbear's 2 bobbin baetis #17 and mcbbears maycad #16. Also fished on 10/4 caught only 6 in rising flows of 60cfs. I fished with another gentleman, frank on 10/2 Who also landed 30, It is gr...
It seems to me with drought projecting into the future, it doesn't make sense to see the current release pattern. I understand that demand drives the releases but it seems shortsighted... The median release for today should be ~270 and here we are at 360! There goes the storage for the future.... Of c...
I'm novice to the fly (only FF ~1-2x a year). I've fished Putah a few times in the past, never with any luck. Well, I'm going to give it a try next Tuesday. If anyone (new or experienced) would like to meet up, let me know. I'd love to learn from someone. Thanks, Joe
Many 6-8 inch fish which to me is a good sign for the fishery. Red midge nymphs and wd-40s did the trick. I suspect I wasn't getting deep enough to reach the bigger fish, but who knows. Anyone else have days like this?
Thanks to whoever found my son's sunglasses and left them on the kiosk at the bridge parking lot. He was very happy to get them back. (so was I!) Philip PS. Fishing was really fun today (9/28).
I lost a Folstaf wading staff today on the river near the parking lot at #3, or maybe slightly upstream of it. If anyone finds it, please message me. Thanks! On another note, a friend and I each caught around a half dozen or so fish, primarily on midges. All on the smaller side, maxing out around 8-9 inc...
