howdy all, first post here.   I grew up in San Jose and fished Putah a bit when I was in High School and a couple times when I'd be back in town during college.  I'd say I haven't been there since 1997 or so. Anyhoo, I will be in Davis next Wednesday night through sunday morning attending the Salmonid Restora...

No New Posts 4/2/12 fishing report (Preview) Putah Creek Fly Fishing 2 858

Fished for about 4 hours, 2 of which were spent prospecting harder to get to areas. Anyone ever manage to catch one in rapids? I bet a lot of fish hold in these remote spots with almost no fishing access. Landed an 18-20 inch on a san juan worm work dropped below a #12 BH prince nymph. Picture attached. Hook...

No New Posts 3/28/12 (Preview) Putah Creek Fly Fishing 5 890

Off color water and lots of hungry fish. Landed 6 today between 12 and 18 inches. Not a banner day but not bad either. Picked most of em up between the bridge and 2. I would say don't go too far downstream right now. Hot flies were red san juans, brassies, and olive military mays. Was wading up from guide hol...

No New Posts Parasites? (Preview) Putah Creek Fly Fishing 4 704

I've been noticing multiple fish with what looks like parasites. They are small pale yellow worm like beasties about 1/8 - 1/4" long. I see them typically on the fins or areas on the body that look injured. I can easily scrape them off but they are definitely adhered to the fish. I'm guessing the...

No New Posts FLPHF on the Putah (Preview) Putah Creek Fly Fishing 0 423

I love it when my Flies Lost Per Hour Fished (FLPHF) is negative. My last outing I picked up 4 more flies than I lost. Some were really nice ties as well. Little jewels. Better than I produce and lose. I attempted a rare false cast at one spot and pulled a rig right off a twig inadvertently. I was shocked to se...

No New Posts Skunked (and Beaver'd) at Putah 5 Yesterday (Preview) Putah Creek Fly Fishing 8 2085

With the morning rains yesterday, I decided fishing was a better option than golf, so even though I got a late start, I packed my lunch and fishing gear and made my way to Putah 5.  (Why 5? I think its the prettiest part of the creek, even it it's not the fishiest).  From 10:30 - 2:00, zero fish caught and unl...

No New Posts Saw an otter on the creek on Wednesday. (Preview) Putah Creek Fly Fishing 0 458

I think it was a "mountain otter." The fishing was pretty slow for me and a friend on Wednesday.  The water was gin clear although the flows were perfect.  I hooked 2 and landed 1 16.5" fish that fought hard.  Missed a few grabs.  My friend got 2 grabs on the swing, but no hookups. Not muc...

No New Posts Indicator lines (Preview) Equipment and Product Reviews 1 1333

Anyone using the Rio indicator or SA lines out there?  I am getting ready to build a Sage 99 and I am curious about matching it up with that line.  I have 2 normal WF 6 wt. lines here but I have this bad affinity for new equipment and a rapidly deminishing bank account.  Figured I may give that line a whirl.  L...

Dear Keith,Lets make 2012 the year that we turn the tide on Pebble for good and protect the incredible Bristol Bay watershed and the world’s largest sockeye salmon run. No New Posts Just booked 4 days camping in June at McArthur Burney State Park (Preview) Other Rivers, Streams and Lakes 7 918

Never been up that way before and I'm really looking forward to it.  I'll have the whole family in tow, including the in-laws from LA, which means there'll be lots of babysitters and potential fishing time. Where are the "must fish" spots?  I don't mind driving an hour or so to get to good fis...

No New Posts Putah creek tour (Preview) Putah Creek Fly Fishing 6 1041

I was just on the Kiene's board and saw that Lance Gray is doing an instructional day the 25th.  Sounds like he's going over techniques, bugs and other environmental concerns.  Anyone heard about this or know what's going on?  135$ a head so he must be doing some fishing as well.

No New Posts What a way to spend a rainy day 3/16 (Preview) Putah Creek Fly Fishing 2 715

I fished the PC yesterday after ~ 3 month hiatus. The PC is in fine shape. The flows are great. There was a little green color. There were mayflies hatching in the middle of the day. I think they were March browns. The dogwoods are beautiful. The poison oak is glorious. I caught a few fish on a black bea...

No New Posts Another etiquette situation. (Preview) Putah Creek Fly Fishing 16 1382

I went through the sticky thread on etiquette and didn't see this mentioned. Last week at the Yuba River expedition there was a couple (man and wife) who jumped on a spot in the middle of the river that they had obviously fished before and hogged it for about 4 hours, switching off so as to monopolize the...

No New Posts Can anyone suggest a place that rents rustic cabins? (Preview) Other Rivers, Streams and Lakes 4 1912

My woman asked me what I wanted to do for my birthday in March. The obvious answer was to fly fish. In order to make the experience inclusive, I came up with the idea of a cabin located on a trout stream. Can anyone suggest a place with simple cabins on a stream/river that holds trout? Send me a PM if you don't...

I have plans to do some fishing on the Lower Yuba in the next month and would love to catch fish on Skwala dry flies.  I did some research on the net and came up with this pattern.   Never having seen an actual Skwala stonefly, I would like some feedback as to whether this pattern might work. tks.

No New Posts 3/5-3/6 - Fishing was slow (Preview) Putah Creek Fly Fishing 4 681

I fished a few deep runs over the coarse of 2 days and found the fishing to be slow. The fish I caught were all with a 2 fly set up, the bottom fly a #18/20 micro may/brassie/midge. Part of it may be my need for a new strategy. Questions for the experienced PC anglers out there: Do you guys use split shot above y...

No New Posts Interesting lure? (Preview) Putah Creek Fly Fishing 4 607

I was up with Steve doing one of our final spawning fish census counts during late February.  There was no longer any spawning activity, but a couple of fish still hanging out.  As I was in the water counting redd's, something caught my eye in the water.  I bent over and picked up this cool trout lure, pic...
