So I have been playing around with some new knots. I have always used improved clinches on most setups. I was googling "strongest fishing knots" the other day and saw the "San Diego knot". Reason for the question is I broke off a big pissed off winter steelhead earlier this we...
Finally (!) joined the forum and thought I'd introduce myself and make a case for the future of Putah Creek.I am the 2nd Chris Y. to join the PCT Board. My family moved to Davis three years ago from the mountains of Virginia, where I served on the Board of the local TU Chapter. I mentions these details for t...
Everyone - I'm traveling from Minneapolis to SF at the end of next week. I have family in Benicia which is only about 1 hour south of Putah I believe. I was thinking about trying to do a 1/2 day on the water. However I'm concerned with how feasible this might be without a guide. Is a 1/2 day too short to...
The fish have been spawning long enough for eggs to be developing in the redds. Avoiding stepping on the gravel beds is even more important than not harrassing the active spawners. This danger will remain until the first of April, so be diligent and avoid wading on any exposed gravel until then.
So I'm clearing up some space here and have a huge stack of magazines. Fly rod and reel, Flyshermen, Fly tyer, American angler, etc. Lots of good info in this stack. If anyone wants them they are free, you pay the postage. They are going in the recycle soon if not....did I mention Northwest flyfisher and...
Whats in pic 1? Where does it come from--hint, its not a fossil (yet). Whats in pic 2 (hint--they are not psychedelic mushroom caps) Whats their function/ Where would you find them?
I can't believe it-- he really does exist! Me and Sarah were fishing yesterday after a great Redds Clinic and we saw a HUGE woodpecker who lives in one of the dead trees up there! It was such a cool addition to a beautiful day on the creek. Has anyone else had a sighting?? Pileated WoodpeckerPileaIt was...
Went out to the Yuba yesterday and threw a few flies. The skwalas are starting to show and there are some big green caddis flying around. Hooked a few landed a few and had a big grab on a mercer skwala dry. The locals from grass valley are throwing their top secret skwala dries and hooking up. The water...
I had a good time on the Russian River yesterday until I unloaded today. I left my rod in the Wohler Bridge Parking lot. A Winston Ibis fly rod 10 1/2 feet weight 7. Thanks for any help. East Bay Ed
New Lower price, need to get rid of this thing. It's a brand new, never used Sage SLT 2 piece 8wt rod. I got it after they discontinued the SLT line and it has been sitting on a shelf ever since. $250
Got my new fishing license and the book they call the steelhead card. Thinking of trying the Russian this week end. Anybody know what condition it's in after last weeks rain. Thanks, East Bay Ed
I fished the Pit river last Tuesday and did very well. Most fish are in the 16 to 18 inch range. The hardest fighting fish that I have come across. The river is high but the fish are in there and there are very few fisherman. If you go, bring a good wading staff as the rocks are very slippery and there are n...
I know people are fishing Putah, but is anyone fishing anywhere else? I hit the lower Yuba 2 weeks ago for a half day and did ok. Nothing over 13" but still was good to get out and hook up some trout. This winter sucks so far. too cold to golf, no snow to go boarding................ -Ty
PCT has been in recent discussions with the owners of Canyon Creek Reort who have expressed a strong interest in working with PCT to improve the wild trout fishery in the Creek as a service to our stakeholders as well as providing conservation education opportunities and fly fishing information an...
Hi everyone, I'll be making a trip to San Francisco in mid to late February and it looks like I'll be able to set aside one day for fishing Putah Creek. Where I am now, tailwaters are extremely cold and the main activity is tiny midges. What kind of activity can I expect at this time of year? Will fish be acti...

We've had a lot of negative feedback recently over certain users and the way they go about things so it's time to lay down the law. It's pretty simple, if you have something to say do it respectfully. If you have criticism do it in a way that isn't going to start a public fight ie Private Message. Nothing go...
I see the "photo of a redd" topic has been closed, which in many respects, is a good thing. As a defender of the fishery, and speaking for myself, not PCT, I have to say that the photo on the FF site is a perfect example of why fishing around a spawning area puts the fish at risk. That fish, possibl...
