I had planned on making this trip last Summer but a work promotion kinda nixed it.  On to 2014

The wife, kids and I are planning a family backpacking trip on the PCT this summer.  We are allocating as many as 9 days though 2 of them will be travel.  A loop of some sort isn't entirely out of the question but current plans are for 2 vehicles, one at each end of our route.

Has anybody on the forum spent any time on the PCT with suggestions for segments to hike?  Obviously lakes and streams are prime camping locations and will be planned accordingly but it would be nice to have some sort of expectations for what to find fish wise.

This trip also gives me an excuse to purchase a couple new multi-piece fly rods.

If we don't get much snow this winter, and it looks like we wont, fishing and water supplies might be scarce by summer time up in the mountains. I've done a 3 day trip on the PCT up near Downieville and another trip on the PCT through Glen Aulin in Yosemite. Both were a blast but we did out and backs, not a loop.

Yeah, water isn't looking so great at the moment, were looking at making the trip in July. Some higher sections would normally still have snow but the lack therof does give us a few more options for which section to hike. I've been on different sections of the PCT in California and Oregon while working for the USFS but never on my own time. The wife and I are jazzed.

east side approach      nothing beats north lake to south lake easy car shuttle also.

west side, florence lake to edison lake easy car shuttle great stream fishing. easy day trips into some lake basins like Bear lake basin up by seven gables nice size goldens.

Ash camp to castle crags, mcload river to upper sac long car shuttle however

sounds fun

good luck

Thank you for the input Tony. The clock is ticking on selecting a location as we still need to reserve our permits. It looks like N-S is about 7 nights but certainly easy on the shuttle as you mentioned.

We keep looking towards the upper part of the state as well. I think I would miss not seeing the high basins but it would be easier on the body at the lower elevations for a families first major trek. Shuttle and poison oak are a nixer for some portions
