I tried it a few years back at Dillons beach. Spent a lot of time looking through the Zen site but only landed two small perch. I was using a 7wt and it certainly was interesting trying to cast, though a striping basket might have helped.

Was a memorable trip just the same. smile

I fly fish the surf, Perch,Rockies,Stripers. Waiting for a big butt in the sand as well.
Zen is key. Surf miki's & zen worms good stuff. Zen dude had it dialed.
Fly fishing the surf is a challenge to say the least. But the fish taste good and I like killing things with a fly rod for a change.
I'm due for some big redtails and now is time. I haven't been out since dec. Winter time is hit n miss trying to get wind, surf, tides to work with. If all 3 of those things line up good, it's usually on. I still take 1 out of the 3 and got for it. And hope its the surf that's good. Let's go!

The basic idea of surf casting relates to cast a bait or lure far from the water in order to reach the

target fish from the shore. But it require long casting distances mostly.

I have been hitting up the shore thing for awhile now. No time to drive to the Sierra's, I've been fishing light gear to fill the void. I have found, you can do no wrong tossing a pile worm pattern, ala Berkely Gulp. So, I'm curious if anyone has tried a San Juan Worm. I'm tempted to do it on a Carolina rig, which is my prefernce for Surf Perch.
Also, if you read the shoreline right, assuming it has "troughs" just at the shore line, I've dragged "Pumkinseed" grubs, through, like I was pocket fishing holes, and getting hook ups with out even casting out.
