Sticky Topic STICKY: Fly Tying Recipes courtesy of the late Gordon Chapple (Preview)
Gordon Chapple loved to fish Putah Creek and helped to organize Putah Creek Trout. He was one of the most energetic enthusiastic members of the newly-formed PCT. Gordon and his wife Kathy died tragically in a flash flood while hiking with family in Utah in September 2008. In addition to his wonde...

No New Posts Fly Tying and Beer (Preview)
Fellow Fly Tyers,  I grew up in NC and honeymooned in Brevard, NC. While in Brevard, I went to a brewery and noticed a flyer that advertised a weekly fly tying meet up in that brewery during the winter months. I thought it was a really awesome idea. Would anyone here be interested in meeting up at a brewery...

No New Posts Size 20 zebra midge, a huge rainbow, and a bent hook. (Preview)
I was fishing this weekend on one of my favorite tailwater sections and hooked a stud of a rainbow on a size 20 zebra midge. Mid fight, the line went slack. When I got my flies in, the hook had straightened out. I’ve fished a ton of these midges this winter and I’ve landed several nice trout, but this was a fi...

No New Posts Fly tying ideas for Putah Creek (Preview)
Anyone who has been tying for a while has probably developed some tying ideas that help him out on the stream. Here are some ideas that I believe have helped me at Putah: - Use bead head flies. Many flies can be tied either with or without a bead. Almost always I prefer the beaded version (preferably a tung...

Not sure if this ok in this forum or if I should have placed it in the "Shameless Plug" section.  Felt this was a little more of the appropriate space. None the less I wanted to share my tying with you... I didn't get a lot of time this past year to focus on the blog having moved from Washington and the new jo...

No New Posts Fly pattern website (Preview)
Found this website today while looking for some new nymphs to tie.  It doesn't give you a recipe, but it has great color plates that you can click on to increase the size.  On the left corner are other patterns you can click on to bring up a new category of flies. http://catchflyfish.com/midge-pattern...

No New Posts Jig Hooks (Preview)
Curious to know how many of you tie and fish Czech style tied on jig heads(?)  Seems like this is the latest craze, but I think the late Ted Fay might have been the first to popularize short-sticking on the Upper Sac.

No New Posts Articulated nymphs (Preview)
Has anyone tied or used an articulated nymph? In my quest to find "THE" fly, the fly that no big fish can resist, I discovered a magazine article that pictured an articulated nymph. Articulated nymphs are tied in two sections. The tail section is tied on a Wiggle Tail shank (a tiny wire shank...

Anyone who fishes a tenakara rod. Do you use/tie the "traditional" tenkara flies or do you fish it with your "standard" flies? Both?

No New Posts Best Dry Fly out there??? (Preview)
Ok so if you see a big mayfly hatch try this fly.  It is a pheasant tail cripple.  It was sold by Idylwild, but apparently they are not shipping flies at this time.  It is kind of sad, but it appears Idylwild is on it's last leg.  It is actually pretty easy to tie.  25+ fish on the Tenkara rod this last weekend...

No New Posts Putah Creek Trout fundraiser: tying flies to help the fishery ( 1 2 3 ) (Preview)
Three years ago a team of forum members took part in a fly tying fundraiser for PCT. I am looking for a repeat of that effort to support the cause and someone willing to coordinate it. The plan calls for a dozen flies of each pattern and 12 different patterns total. The perfect result would be 12 differ...

My buddy called me last night and he has a some pheasant tail hides he wants to give me for tying.  I heard I might want to treat those before I use them??  Anyone know that process or if I really need to do it.

Hey Bob, I think this pattern is pretty easy to duplicate. The Lembroughton's will carry on! I need to trim the wings slightly shorter on the next one, this was the experimental first tie. Packrat

No New Posts Yuba Skwala Dries (Preview)
I have plans to do some fishing on the Lower Yuba in the next month and would love to catch fish on Skwala dry flies.  I did some research on the net and came up with this pattern.   Never having seen an actual Skwala stonefly, I would like some feedback as to whether this pattern might work. tks.

No New Posts Question about tying large clouser minnows. (Preview)
Well, I'm in full production mode for my next trip to Baja in April and have been tying clousers like a maniac.  I talked to Bob Alwine at Sweeney's (thanks for the tip Chris) and he told me that tying the eyes a little further back from the eye will make the fly swim erraticly and hence trigger more strikes...

Kind of a weird part of the year.  Maybe folks are tying to keep their boxes full, some maybe keeping up with steelhead flies, some maybe gearing up for spring already?  What's everyone tying out there???  Curious to know.

Got around to some fly tying the other night.  Pheasant tails were running low so I tied a few up.  I was sitting there thinking how many fish on different bodies and styles of water this thing has caught.  I also came to realize that if I could only fish one fly for the rest of my life this thing would be it. ...

No New Posts Gamakatsu p10 hook. (Preview)
I was just tying up some small FBPT's and remembered somewhere that I had straightened out a #18 Gamakatsu P10 on a big fish a few years ago.  I wonder if I just wasted 1/2 hr tying on P10's or my memory sucks. First of all, isn't Gamakatsu considered a quality hook?  Secondly, has that ever happened to any...

No New Posts Wiggle tail (Preview)
Some of the rivers have been blown out for much of this year, so I have had tons of fun fishing lakes.  The lakes are pretty high as well.  Using an intermediate camo line you can hook some of the wary fish.  The wiggle tail works well on many lakes.  There is a little lake that is the middle upper part of the Y...
