Lower Putah
(Preview)
Went for a walk today behind my house along the creek here in winters. The restoration that was done increased the rate of the flow, and made the creek much deeper and more narrow. There are a couple sections that look like they could hold fish, if the fish were there to be held. Just wondering if anyone k...

FYI: the Accesses are closed to cars indefinitely
(Preview)
Yolo County has closed the parking lots due to vandalism of the iron rangers for whatever money they may contain. I know most of us park on the shoulders anyway, but many that use them for picnics, etc. are affected. If you find vandalism, be a good neighbor and call Jerry Wright of Yolo County Parks, 530...

Please leave the spawners alone!
(Preview)
Reports are coming in that individuals are targeting fish on their redds, particularly near access 3 and around the bridge. PLEASE LEAVE THEM ALONE! They are not interested in your flies and snagging in the body or flossing them in the mouth area is illegal. Spawning fish are highly visible, bri...

(Preview)
Hit the creek yesterday and tried all the usual spots. Got the big skunk but did have a couple small ones hooked up for a few seconds. What was interesting was that I saw rising fish. I'm no entomologist but some sort of hatch was going off, there were clouds of bugs drifting and flying near the surface. Es...

Smallest fly caught fish ever?
(Preview)
I forgot to mention in my Putah report yesterday an unusual catch. I caught what I think is called a stickleback. It was less than 1-1/4" long. And yes, it actually ate my #22 midge nymph.

57 CFS again and again and again

Many have noted that the USGS site has been stuck at 57 CFS For more than a week now despite the obvious increase in flow. I messages the isle manager. Here is his reply:
"Thank you for your observations. It is impossible for me to tell from the graph what might be happening.
I will let the Sacrame...

Trimming the bushes ?
(Preview)
I see someone has takin it upon themselves to do some tree cutting along putah creek to gain more or "easier" fishing. Using pruning shears is one thing but this is beyond that. I'd like to hear what others think about this. I can potentially see this becoming a problem. I think if you need to...

Fishing Putah Monday. Want to meet up?

I live about an hour from Putah creek by Middletown. I haven't fished much in the last two years due to my wife's health issues. She's better now. I will be there monday for most of the day. If you want to meet up, let me know. On the other hand, I will be driving a white Ford Ranger if you see me there. Mi...

Summary of Online survey reports for November
(Preview)
Thank all of you who've reported your trips to the creek. We had 42/45 reports with fish caught, 1-17, ave. 6+ (257 total). This is about double last years totals for November. These results may be skewed a bit by who is/isn't completing a survey when they go out. If you are not catching fish, that infor...

Salmon Spawn: Flows are going up tomorrow
(Preview)
The creek flows will be going up tomorrow to send a pulse down the lower creek to assist any salmon to come up for spawning. The flows are usually raised to around 100 cfs for several days; until Dec 5 this year. There is a need to knock holes in beaver dams below the diversion dam all the way out to the Sac ri...

Today, after checking spawning sites, meeting some nice folks including bwag, I stopped at Access 5 for a few minutes of fishing. Putah Creeks Lighter Side

Hello, first time posting, started fishing Putah this summer after a 20 year break from fishing all together. Seems like the holes/riffles that I have been fishing for the past two months aren't producing the fish for me. I know they are there, I can see them jumping out of the water. I suspect tha...

I have noticed a lot of young fish in the creek compared to last year. (Ed Note: maybe because I am actually catching some fish this year). Gov Putah Creek flows site off?

I looked at the govt's website before fishing yesterday and it appeared to signal around 120 cfs. When I got to PC the flows appeared much lower than this, maybe around 80cfs. Looking at the bank and the rocks, the water looked as if it had dropped at least 6" from the previous day, probably more....

I first want to start off by giving a big THANKS to SK60 and those that helped out on 10/28 for the weed removal session on the creek with DFG. Putah on the rise

I've been lucky to go out a couple days in a row in the late afternoon. There is a lot more surface action than I ever anticipated or noted before. Good day on the Putah
(Preview)
I fished the Putah today. The flows have been steady for 2 days just under 100 CFS. I figured that the trout may be settled in to feed before the spawn... The first stop was a ziltch. The second was a skunk but the third spot was worth it. I had three to the hand mostly in the 8-10" range on a sparkle p...
