My family moved to Davis three years ago from the mountains of Virginia, where I served on the Board of the local TU Chapter. I mentions these details for t...

No New Posts Traveling to SF (Preview)
Everyone -    I'm traveling from Minneapolis to SF at the end of next week.  I have family in Benicia which is only about 1 hour south of Putah I believe.   I was thinking about trying to do a 1/2 day on the water.  However I'm concerned with how feasible this might be without a guide.  Is a 1/2 day too short to...

No New Posts Spawn continues on: don't tread on redds (Preview)
The fish have been spawning long enough for eggs to be developing in the redds. Avoiding stepping on the gravel beds is even more important than not harrassing the active spawners. This danger will remain until the first of April, so be diligent and avoid wading on any exposed gravel until then.

No New Posts East coaster visiting in late February (Preview)
Hi everyone, I'll be making a trip to San Francisco in mid to late February and it looks like I'll be able to set aside one day for fishing Putah Creek. Where I am now, tailwaters are extremely cold and the main activity is tiny midges. What kind of activity can I expect at this time of year? Will fish be acti...

We've had a lot of negative feedback recently over certain users and the way they go about things so it's time to lay down the law. It's pretty simple, if you have something to say do it respectfully. If you have criticism do it in a way that isn't going to start a public fight ie Private Message. Nothing go...

No New Posts Gravid female picture (Preview)
I see the "photo of a redd" topic has been closed, which in many respects, is a good thing. As a defender of the fishery, and speaking for myself, not PCT, I have to say that the photo on the FF site is a perfect example of why fishing around a spawning area puts the fish at risk. That fish, possibl...

Was up at Putah on 01/02/2012 and fished access 3 for a few minutes then left and went down to 4.  Came up with goose eggs..for the day!  Oh well it's gotta happen every now and then.  After I quit fishing, I went upstream and took some photos of the redds, couldn't actually take any pictures of the fish, th...

No New Posts Floatant on Wet Flys (Preview)
Has anyone ever heard about putting floatant on wet flys?  I was talking to a guy who said that the air bubbles caught by the floatant on the fly more closely matches that of a rising nymph.

No New Posts Night time fishing of redds: its real (Preview)
Remember the Dec 22 post I made about night fishing? Last night two individuals were caught fishing redds by local LEOs called to the scene by one of our members. They had spinning gear with heavy lures and hooks. Its uncertain that they had caught fish before being ordered off the creek. Presumably t...

I will be leading a short class on how to avoid damaging the Redds on the creek and how to avoid spawning fish during the spawn.  Each year the spawning fish move around to different areas and anyone who fishes from November to February should be informed of how to spot spawners and redds.  From February...

A good 22 inches, dark red stripe down the whole length of the fish, fought it for about 8 minutes as it ran up and down the hole twice.  It was getting dark and I got greedy thinking I could grab my leader and net it quickly, we all know what happend after that! Felt like I got a strong kick in the junk when I saw...

Good work on the forum guys. I come up to the area (actually Live Oak) 4 or 5 times a year to visit my daughter. Usually fish the Upper Sac or Lower Yuba. I am coming up the day after Christmas. Reports for my usual areas were not good, reports for Putah were good so I thought I would try it for the first time. I c...

No New Posts Lower Putah (Preview)
Went for a walk today behind my house along the creek here in winters. The restoration that was done increased the rate of the flow, and made the creek much deeper and more narrow.   There are a couple sections that look like they could hold fish, if the fish were there to be held. Just wondering if anyone k...

Yolo County has closed the parking lots due to vandalism of the iron rangers for whatever money they may contain. I know most of us park on the shoulders anyway, but many that use them for picnics, etc. are affected. If you find vandalism, be a good neighbor and call Jerry Wright of Yolo County Parks, 530...

Reports are coming in that individuals are targeting fish on their redds, particularly near access 3 and around the bridge. PLEASE LEAVE THEM ALONE! They are not interested in your flies and snagging in the body or flossing them in the mouth area is illegal. Spawning fish are highly visible, bri...

Hit the creek yesterday and tried all the usual spots. Got the big skunk but did have a couple small ones hooked up for a few seconds. What was interesting was that I saw rising fish. I'm no entomologist but some sort of hatch was going off, there were clouds of bugs drifting and flying near the surface. Es...

No New Posts Smallest fly caught fish ever? (Preview)
I forgot to mention in my Putah report yesterday an unusual catch.  I caught what I think is called a stickleback.  It was less than 1-1/4" long.  And yes, it actually ate my #22 midge nymph.

I see someone has takin it upon themselves to do some tree cutting along putah creek to gain more or "easier" fishing. Using pruning shears is one thing but this is beyond that. I'd like to hear what others think about this. I can potentially see this becoming a problem. I think if you need to...
