Got out onto Putah after a long time away. The flows were high but the water was very clear and fishable. You had to know your access spots to get into good sections of water. Between me and my buddy we must have hooked around 20 fish between 10:00am and 4:00pm. Pretty much every fish came on a size 20 black midge (aka JT's drowned midge pattern). Seems like any fish of real size is either down in the lake for the summer or just not showing any activity. We got nothing but smalls ranging from 10-14" but who cares, the weather was great, very very few other fishermen and ice cold Boont Ambers at the end of the day.
Had a similar outing today at access 5 to 4. Had fun with my new Z-Axis 6110 switch rod. Way overpowered those 7 - 12 inchers but it was fun practicing some casts. Fish on small black drowned midge and a psycho prince. Some mayflies hatcearly just after noon.
Boont Amber Ale is my favorite as well...
Regards

I'm using Rio's Switch Line in 5/6. I really like it. It hucks indicators a mile and is easy to mend. Jim at Kiene's also hooked me up with the Airflow Rage and Rio versileaders for float, intermediate and fast sink to cover swinging for shad and summer steelhead. They let me try out 360,390 and 420 grain weights from their line library. I thought the 360 was best but then again I really don't know what I'm doing as I am new to switch/Spey. I'm using Rio Slickshooter mono for running line on the Rage head. The Rage casts and fishes somewhere between a Scandi and Skagit system and gives you a somewhat more all around shooting head experience.
Next stop is a session with Jeff Putnum. Hopefully he can get me on the right track regarding casting. Let me know what your experience is with the rod and lines you end up with.

Jeff Putnam is an awesome instructor. First time i ever went steelheading with a spey road I hired jeff for one lesson. In one lesson i was laying it out there great----concerning i self taught myself how to cast a fly rod, it was amazing how much quicker the learning curve was when you have someone like Jeff teaching you.
Sorry for hijacking thread. Thanks for the report Packrat
