As just about everyone is aware, Putah Creek Trout has submitted a proposal to the Fish and Game Commission which asks to amend the current regulations on the Inter Dam Reach to year round catch and release using barbless artificial lure or fly only.
The open public comment period with the Fish and Game Commission for this proposal has just ended. There were over 500 letters received in support of this regs change and apparently none opposed. There were letters of support from local Winters businesses, other conservation groups and also the political arena. Steve Karr, Ed Justus, Jerry Lewis and Gary Chang spent a lot of time educating the public regarding the decision to submit the proposed regulations amendment. This involved attending numerous public meetings as well as conservation group meetings in the area. Through their efforts, widespread support from the area was harnessed for the regs change proposal. Cliff Scorso put together flyers and marketing material for the cause, which we were able to distribute to the public as another source of "getting the word out". Now we await the decision of the Fish and Game Commission. They are the governing body who oversees any change in the state fishing regulations. The decision will be announced at the December Commission meeting, and would go into effect in March if passed. No matter what the outcome, these guys deserve a huge hand for all of the time put into this effort. Again, regardless of the outcome, there are limitless continued opportunities available to support the ongoing improvement of Putah Creek. Opportunity #1 . . . begin by signing up as a member of Putah Creek Trout!!!!!
Thanks for the kind words Bob. There were several others, including yourself and Chris Yama, and Cole Davis and Steve Giovannoni who beat the bushes for letters or petition signatures, and Steve Marshall (who helped with letter of support drafts) and the 500+ individuals, agencies, organizations, and businesses (many of whom don't fish) who saw the importance of protecting this great resource. Our membership and friends have filled a big void in the protection and managemnt of the fishery. A lot of hard work but rewarding even if the fish don't care.
