Do any of you use, or have heard good things about the TFO Lefty Kreh Professional Series fly rods? Specifically the 9' 5wt version. I just won one of these and am wondering how good of a rod it is. Thanks!

Congrats! Did you win it on FAOL?

I cast Richard's TFO rod last weekend. I'm not sure which rod it was, but needless to say I was impressed. Good action and I was able to roll cast a thingamabober split-shot rig the the other side of a river without much effort. I think my Rio Grand line was partly responsible, but the rod was great.

Get a good line for it - if it's a fast action rod, I highly recommend the Rio Grand line. Or, if you nymph most of the time, put on a Rio Nymph line. The latter is great for roll and single-handed spey casts, and big mends. Both lines load the rod well at short distances at the expensive of distance casting and dry fly presentation.

just my two cents,
V

TFO is known to be a great rod company, but I've never used the pro series.

I own a TFO 3 weight 7'-6" Finesse series by Lefty Kreh and I love it for small streams.  I bought a friend of mine the 9' 5 wt 2 piece Professional Series last year and he loves it.  I know he has used it on the Upper Sac, McCloud and the East & West Carson rivers and has had no probelms landing fish up to 20 inches.

One of my friends has the 4 piece 9 foot 5 weight Pro Series rod. It is a medium fast action rod. I like to call it a working man's rod because it does a little of everything well. It may not be as subtle in presentation or cast as far as some premium rods, but it will do just about everything that you could require from a rod.

Heal fast and enjoy your rod.

Edit:  Disregard the "heal fast" comment.  I had someone else in mind.

Disregard the "heal fast" comment. I was on the phone earlier with a fly fishing buddy who has a bum foot. He was complaining because he has a new rod, and he can't fish right now. Somehow his injury stuck in my mind.

I just got one of these the other day from cabelas, but a 4 weight 4 piece 8 ft. I think it's great. Casting and feel is amazing compared to the rod it replaced.

Have you tried it out yet?

Haven't received it in the mail yet. I'll be sure to post my thoughts once I get it.

Hey Jon,  I've got the signature series in a 5wt 9'.  Like some of the other fellas said it can pretty much do everything.  Although I've never used a premium rod so who knows.  FREE sounds good though.
