What do you mean by getting pops when pulling your line out of the water? Are you using a thingamabobber?

If you do much dry fly fishing you will also notice this "pop". It defenitly can scare the fish. I find that it is because you are picking it up to fast for your backcast, Try picking up your rig gently when preparing for a backcast. I preffere poly yarn indicators that are trimmed down to about half the size as they come and rub it good with floatant, A well used poly yarn indo. floats better then a new. These are just some things I have noticed, others may have other opinions.

Richard,
I bet your being pretty agressive when you fling the line back up river after your have finished your drift. You were doing the same thing when we went out together. Slow down a little and let the rod get some bend in it before you fling your line back up stream.I hate to say it but half the problem is your rod, if your still using the same one...That rod is super stiff and it does not load well.
Remember this. casting a fly rod is 10% mucle and 90% skill.I know a 10 year kid that can out cast me with half the rod...

Just switched to yarn and boy, I'm much happier too. I find that unlike some other indicators, I never loose the yarn during a cast, and it's less likely to get snagged in the rocks.

Totally agree with Mx19. The most perfect graceful caster I've ever seen is a 70 somethin year old lady. Ditch the stiff rods ! Medium action baby, I'll never go back to the fast actions. Besides it's just somethin i love when a big fish has that rod bent to the cork.

How do ya read the markings on the rod to tell rod stiffness . I sat on that old rod of mine ouch serves me right for useing two rods . anyway im useing another rod its a 9 foot .Pfueger purist and the # s are.pp9056    (2.74m)   #5. when mx19 took me vince and sarah to the feather he was telling us about the #s .I just can't what he said about them . Is this a stiff rod?

The rod you were using on the feather was very stiff.if you are still using that same rod it is 1/2 your problem.

A 4 wt is a lighter rod, but the stiffness depends on the action. A fast action rod is stiffer. Try to find a medium action rod... It will make casting a lot easier.

pp stands for pfleuger purist, 9056 means 9' 5/6 weight. i would guess 2.74 is the length of the rod in meters.

Thats my best guess.

Just got back from putah this afternoon and I like the yarn . Never heard one indicator pop .I took a friend out with me and sarah and he really enjoyed  the river It's really funny watching a newbee trying to cast and wetwade at access five he had this look of where are you taking me . I know It did him a lot of good though . his mom is passing and he is having relationship problems ! what a combo . It's really nice to show friends the sport and the river and take a load off. I think he really enjoyed it . I really love this sport!

P.s both me and sarah got strikes. but didn't land anything.

I know I'm a total newbie but I found casting much easier today and it was the first time I have used my old-school bamboo since I bought it used in NH-- my "regular" rod is very VERY "wobbly" when I cast (is that fast action or slow? I'm so confused on that point!) and it drives me crazy!! bleh So I tried the bamboo @ Putah today and it seemed SO much easier and simpler to make short casts-- I know it's not for long casts--so I think I'm disagreeing with you veterans about the stiffer rod being easier than a more flexible one....what do ya think, guys??confuse

I haven't posted in a while.  I don't have much time to read the posts on the message board any more.   I don't have time to fish anymore either.  I work nights and get off just in time to go teach a class.  When I get home I spend the rest of the day with my daughter and try to prepare my lesson for the next day.  Hopefully I'll figure out how to manage my time better by the time steelhead season comes around.

About the rod's action, the numbers on the rod don't tell you anything about the stiffness of the rod.  You actually have to pick up the rod.  You might be able to google the rod using the model numbers to find out what type of action your rod has.

Glad to see you are still out there JT. I think Brian has more posts than you now. What are you teaching? I would say go back to grad school, college is much more fun than working.

As for the original topic of indicators or even dry droppers use the smallest indicator or fly that will float your rig. Bigger bubble indicators should be used for big water when you need heavy weight like an ssg or a double ssg. For smaller flows use a yarn indicator, they don't pop if you strip back slowly. Watch the indicator if it drops slowly, let it sink then set. If it drops fast set fast.

Once you have figured out indicators, take them off. Use the force!!
