I always see fishermen out with waders comfortably in the water, while me and my dad are freezing. I asked him why we haven't gotten any waders, it seems so much better...
He said that he didn't like the danger of them filling up with water, and possibly drowning or getting taking away by the current. While most likely possible, how relevant is this issue?
Is there a piece in the design I am missing or is it just a small risk you take...
it is always a risk when you are wading. if you take necessary precautions they can help you get closer to that riding fish to get well aimed cast in. One thing that always helps is bringing a wading staff. it can be as simple as a stick or an old ski pole. they can get you out of many situations. The one thing that keeps you from filling up, is a wading belt. it tightens around your chest and doesn't allow alot of water in. as long as you stay within your limits and dont do anything dumb, you wont drown...

Fishing isn't a matter of life and death....
It's much more important.
I read it, and it helped I was just wondering just how dangerous they are.
One more thing, do you guys really fall that often with them on? I have never actually totally lost my balance and fell in. Is it easier to do with waders on...

What is the danger of your waders filling with water?
I dont know, like I said I have heard that you sometimes cant get out, lose your balance, get swept away... I wanted to get it straight, is it that life endangering or an exageration...
I remember a fly fishing magazine doing a pool test a while back, and they disproved the "sink like an anchor" theory. I found this while looking for that original article: http://www.flyrodreel.com/node/10549
I've heard of people saying that filling your waders with water is dangerous. I don't agree with this. If your waders are full of water on dry land, they will feel heavy. If you're in the water, however, that's not the case. I can imagine that it would be more difficult to swim in boots and waders as opposed to shorts, but the swamped waders idea does not make sense when you think about the physics behind it.
