i recently bought a pair of simms freestones, well they are on their way back to simms do to crappy material, the eyelets broke and the shoe laces are already coming apart. anyways here is my question.
i bought 10s they fit great with waders and one pair of thermal socks, but wondering how well with 11s fit. can i put 2 pairs of thermal socks on and fit nicely in 11s, i do know that 10s are awsome with my wading socks, and well i can always add socks as well with those. right now i can not put on a normal pair of shoe socks with a pair of thermals and fit in my 10s its to tight, so 2 pairs of thermals is out of the question.
so from personal experience should i go up in a size so my feet dont freeze like they did on the LT the other day with only one pair of thermal socks on.
what do you all recommend. always go up a size bigger.

I wear a 91/2 shoe and use a size 11 boot, Works for me. What are you going to do in the mean time ? It took me almost 2 weeks to get new boots from simms, I was lucky and the guy at the flyshop loaned me a pair of his own.
american fly is hooking me up the same way. just got to get the boots the night before then bring them back the day after my fishing trip

if the issue is the cold I would try buying a better pair of socks. What is with all the two, three pair of sock talk. Ive decided when we hit up the yuba im going to make you wet-wade.

Good point about the socks, Drifter. One pair is all that is needed.
The best socks are made from some sort of high tech synthetic blend or Merino wool. These materials will both wick moisture and insulate. Stay away from cotton.
so those EXSTREAM WADING SOCKS are the best for cold cold weather. i love how the 10s fit, just sometimes i want the extra layer of warmth on my feet and cant do it with the 10s, so are you suggesting better thermal socks first before i move up to 11s.

patagonia how did i know. i am actually gonna get a great deal at american fly, gonna get 3 pair for price of 2. i am going to buy 2 pair simms exstreams (giving one pair to chuck) then get the Simms WaderWick Liner Socks for free. oh ya no tax as well tomorrow at the shop.
i have thought about having 2 pairs of boots, one for wet wading a size 10 then a pair for using in waders a size 11. thats not to far into the future.

You should have a pair for putah...and a pair for everywhere else....If you crank down hard on your laces the eyes you will pull them out in due time.you are supose to cross tie your laces on boots so the tention is the same on each eye....If you do dont want cold feet then buy a pair of boot foot waders.Any hard core steelheader could of told you that...all the socks in the world are'nt going to help in nasty cold water...I use simms with muck boots build in...Ya I know your going to say they are exspensive, but what sport is cheap... As far as what size boot to get.try them on with your waders.waders come with a boot stocking desiged to fit 2 to 3 foot sizes....you will never know unless you try them on together...
The liner socks with a pair of thick socks over them works pretty good, Thats what i usually use. As for thermals under the waders, Don't even bother with the usual cotton stuff, Cotton will not keep you warm, Get some thick spandex type pants like thats made for bicycling, They keep me pretty warm. They're not cheap but its a worthwhile investment if you fish in the winter.
Hey BC ... Your friends love to give you a rash here don't they?! Good Job All. Don't take it personal ... remember, we'd just ignore ya if we didn't like ya.
You're on target. Little more than a year ago I bought a pair of size 11 freestones. LOVE 'em!
I wear anywhere from a 9 1/2 to 10 1/2 street shoe depending on who made it. I wear the FS's with one pair of HEAVY wool socks, and a neo booty attached to my waders. I wear this with various combo's of Simms thermals and underarmor thermals. I wear it ALL when it's heck a cold. Boots are good with all of this. Width is my issue. I bet you could fit that second pair of socks is NO issue, but I agree with the others that say, just find a better sock.
Bottom line, get the 11's and sort the rest out.

And thanks to Brian for asking so I don't have to! We went to Putah today (October 4) and I get cold easily and dang! my feet were frozen after a couple hours in cotton socks-- I'll put a wool pair on my list-- the links were helpful!

Prettyfly, wool socks come in different lengths. The short ones are basically the length of normal socks. Midlength ones are long enough to cover your calf (these are typically the ones you find in fly shops). Long ones go all the way up to your knee. So depending upon how much of your legs got cold, you can get the sock length that will serve you the best. I also have trouble with cold legs. I use the long socks in Winter and the midlength socks in warmer weather. The long socks may not be available in local fly shops so you may have to look in flyfishing catalogs. I believe I got my longs socks from Cabelas.
Prettyfly, If you want higher cut wool socks, get some of the thicker snowboarding socks. Being in the Fall season, you can get snowboard socks at many sporting goods stores and specialty retailers.
I generally use wool hiking socks. For winter fishing I use wool snowboard socks.
