Sage Fli vs. Orvis TLS rod

Looking for a new 5wt. I hear the Sage Fli rod is being discontinued and from the previous posts sounds like the Fli tip flex has some problems. However, I don't know much about the Orvis TLS. Any input would be much appreciated.

I have one and love it, that is a TLS. My only complaint is that it struggles throwing big streamer patterns.

Does anyone own a Sage Fli 7 or 8 weight rod?  I am looking into getting a Steelhead rod for this winter and was wondering if anyone had this model in that weight or any other rods around the $300-400 range.  I am also looking at the R L Winston Vapor, Echo 2, Redington RS4, Scott A2 or G Loomis GL3.

I have a 6wt GL3 and I really like it. It's a fast action rod with some back bone to it. I dont know about the other ones, but you will probably want to cast a few to find which works best for you. Also if you are looking into a winter steelhead rod you might want to consider a switch rod.

Yeah only problem with switch rods is that they are over $600 and I have only seen the 2 from Sage and G Loomis or are there more?  I used to have a 5wt 9 foot GL2 loomis rod and loved it, left it behind on a fishing trip with a Galvan Torque reel on it and went back next day and someone had a nice present I am sure, it was gone.
I plan on casting the Sage, Redington and maybe a St. Criox at Sweeneys and then the rest in Santa Rosa at the Western fly shop.

Is your GL3 a 2 piece, I think all or most of their GL3 rods are 2 piece?

There are three Sage dealers in the Sacramento region. I'm sure that you can find a Sage FLi on clearance at one of them.

Switch rods can be found at the mid price points now. TFO has its Deer Creek series of switch rods that run around the low $300s. Beulah makes a great switch rod at the low $400s.

I'd go with the Scott.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

JT do you have any Scott rods that are close to the A2 8 weight, just wondering why you suggested Scott.

I also just read that the Vapor from RL Winston is made in China and I would rather buy a rod made here in the US, so I can check that 1 off the list!

Bob at Sierra Anglers (209-572-2212) in Modesto has an 8 weight Fli and a few other weights--at least the last time I visited--marked down 40%.

I have a 5wt and a 6wt.  If I could afford to buy more, I would.

I didn't think I could afford it, but my wife thought we could.  She decided that I needed another rod, so I picked up a Scott A2 today.  Take a look around.  You can get a really good deal on an A2 right now, since it's been discontinued.  The new A3 is replacing it next year.

I just had the exact conversation with my wife JT.  I was thinking about getting the save Bristol Bay outfit from Sage, Redington and Rio but decided against it.  Still buying a rod though, can't decide what.
