Was considering fishing Putah on Monday but wasn't sure how the rain would impact fishing.  So far the flows haven't changed much.  Would be very interested in opinions of those with more experience fishing the creek after storms such as this.  Appreciate any comments.

If I had the chance to fish it Monday I would. No crowds which is a good thing. I don't think we had enough rain to blow it out. Horse Creek out of cold canyon is the worst offender (it's the creek that comes in just above the upper bridge). Lots of muddy runoff comes in at other places but Horse cr is the worst. A little color in the creek dosn't necessarily hurt the fishing either, especially with the low winter flows. If it looks too brown for your taste you can always head toward the dam.

I made it up to putah for a few hours today and the rain hasn't had any effect on water clarity or level. I only hooked one and didnt land em, was maybe a 15 incher, on a yellow glo bug. I can't beleive the numbers of fish on redds right know, it's really cool to sit back and watch the trout, you just might learn something about em, i never realized how many large fish there are in putah, spotted at least 20 fish in the 16 to 20+ inch range. and if you come across fish in these conditions....LEAVE EM ALONE !!!!!

Well said Captain.  As a matter of clarification for a relatively new fly fisherman, are the redds actually detectable by their color in the gravel?  Also, can we assume that anytime we find a group of fish congregating in shallower water on the creek this time of year, that it is a spawning area to be avoided?

if you come across fish in shallow riffles, they are most defenitly in the love makin mood........the redds can be identified as cleaned gravel areas where, for the most part there is moss covered area's around em but you can see the cleaned out gravel area of the redd, they kinda turn on there side and clean out an area with there tail, its really cool to watch. Just be careful wading ijn shallow riffles with gravel, you just might step on and kill hundreds of trout !

Thanks for the info everyone.  I am new to this and certainly want to avoid the spawning fish.
