I probably should make this its own topic, (rather than post it on the yuba river one). I am thinking about trying my hand at steelhead this winter...any suggestions?  I am thinking about heading out to the yuba this saterday, but I have never had that great of luck out there, I have only fished it a couple of times though too.  How is it fishing right now?  Are the salmon still in the river? Other than glo bug and stoneflys is there anything i should throw into my box? If the yuba is not fishing well right now, where is? Thanks

The American basically runs through my backyard (2 miles away) and since I got a fly rod Ive tried for steelhead, but get skunked everytime. Is anybody familiar with the river by like Ansel Hoffman Park or any place in fairly close proximity? If so, when I get another pair of waiters for here (others are kept in Almanor), I would like to meet up and give it a shot. Ive tried researching the river, but cant seem to really get it down. People show "steelhead flies" on thier sites, but none of those hot pink lookin thingies work for me. Help is much appreciated!

Thanks,

MotoGP (Matt)

I fished the lower yuba 3 weeks ago and it sucked, i fished 9 hours without a single hit, i have heard from others lately that have had similar luck, there were alot of salmon in the river at that time, i set up right behind the the redds with egg patterns and had no luck. hope you do better then i did. oh and i wouldnt bother with the hammond grove area, the floods of last april have totally changed the river in that area, near the hwy. 20 bridge has much better looking water, the area above the bridge has been closed for several months and opens on dec. 1st so maybe that would be a place to try, after all it hasnt been touch for about 3 months!

I've had good success this year with a fly that is mostly yellow maribou with a streak of hot pink and a chartreuse rooster saddle tied in at the head. I've taken roughly 20 salmon and 6 steelhead (in the American alone)with this pattern I tie.  Before the racks went up I took a 33" steelie just behind the little island below the nimbus dam. Most of the steelies hit after the sun is well below the rocks there. Plan on landing your fish after dark though.
