Upper and Lower Sac

Spent a day floating the Lower Sac and a couple half days on the Upper Sac.  Lower Sac, as usual was absolutely tremendous!  Had to adjust to setting the hook at such deep depths (this took longer than I would like to admit with me losing a few solid strikes), but once I got in the groove it was big fish after big fish.  Fish were average for the river, with most in the 14 - 20 inch range, with the largest a little + 20 inches.  But once they are over about 16'', they do turn into real footballs.  Acidentally had 1 salmon take a fly (clean, not foul hooked) but he was easy enough to shake off, and also caught a nice big squaw fish by accident.  Amazing time!  The best fight was actually a lunker that eventually broke off by ramming itself into a clay bank.

Also spend 2 half days on the Upper Sac which was in great shape and looked great, but fished only OK.  October caddis were evident everywhere with hatches starting to occur.

If anyone is looking for guaranteed big fish, I would recommend a drift boat trip on the Lower Sac.  The river is in great shape!

I too fished the lower Sac two weeks ago.  Excellent trip, lots of nice fish.  Yes the hook setting takes some getting used to at the depths and the current, but whoa look out these fish fight real well.  I actually hooked a couple of salmon by mistake, kinda like hooking a branch :) Big fish of the trip was 19.5".  Great guide out of the fly shop in Redding.  I will make this trip again.  Maybe even this year
