planning to hit it early tommorrow morning, just checking the flows and it reads 35 cfm, this is impossible, isn't it ? was reading 470 early today. anyways anyone been having any luck? I managed 3 fish last weekend for almost 6 hours, a 14 inch bright wild, a 8 inch planter, and a very nice looking holdover planter that went 17 inches. all on a red san juan worm. I have been concentrating my efforts around the first split/island above the lake up to the first access point, anyone else like to fish this area, its my favorite area lately, i cant stand fishing up around the resort area, too many bodies.
I'll bet that this is an error in the flows. Last spring when the flows were high I saw a big drop and decided to head out. It turned out that they hadn't really dropped and when I got home the flows were right back to the normal levels.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on with the flows and the impact on fishing? Was thinking about a trip up this week and would love any info/insight others on this board might have. Thanks!
Howdy Y'all, I think the creek is pretty worn out lately. I caught a good sized wild rainbow Friday evening. I thought I snagged a branch, reeled it in and found a 'bow hangin' on the end with no fight at all. I just let him spit it out on his own, then I went home. I'll look forward to late November.
the flows are way wrong, was reading 35 on saturday and actually was closer to 500 cfm. Anyways i fished all day and landed 11 rainbows, 10 were wild all caught in about the same spot, a little ways about the first island above the lake, also caaught a nice sized sucker.
Just a comment about the creek's flows. I was in Sweeney's Sports today and talked to a guy who worked there. I mentioned that today's flow was listed at only 17 CFS. Unfortunately, the guy who worked there said that this was CORRECT! He said a guy came into Sweeneys yesterday and said that he had fished Putah. They guy reported that Putah's flows were WAY down. So it seems that the flows were truly cut back to a mere trickle for a couple of days. Thankfully, the flows are back up to about 450, but there's no telling how much damage was done to the creek. Hopefully, not too much.
I think that the guy at Sweeneys was mistaken. A buddy of mind went out Sunday, right in the middle of the supposed low flows. He said it appeared to be about 500 cfs as usual. I called the USGS at 10 am today to report the odd flow readings, and right after that they jumped back up to 451 cfs. It appears that whatever glitch there was in the system has been fixed.
Thanks, Phil. They guy at Sweeneys seemed convinced that the flows had been cut back so I naturally believed him. In any case, I'm glad that the data was wrong. An instantaneous drop in flows of 400+ CFS as reported on the CDEC website would have been very damaging to the stream.
the guy at sweeneys had to be mistakin i checked the flows at 5 a.m and said 35 got to the creek at 6 a.m and was about 500 cfm. i caught my fish all on glowbugs, yellow....hey im not a purist, what can i say. it was a lucky day, maybe my best ever i usually dont do well, but i moved around alot this time and kept tryin new spots till i found something, i think sometimes people get stuck on fishing the same areas too much, also i been tryin to stay away from the spots that get fished alot, i like the spots that take a lil work to get to.
Thanks Captain. I'm not averse to using egg patterns on the creek, and it seems that they can work any time of the year. And with regard to the flows, I got a call from the USGS today and they did have an equipment problem which they were able to fix yesterday. I guess they don't worry about it as much as those of us who have to wade in the creek and want to know what we are in for.
