I've heard that Haypress Creek in Sierra City (Wild Plum campground), which feeds into North Fork Yuba, is good during July...dries for smallish brookies.
Anyone have experience on Haypress? What about August?
Funny you mention Haypress - a pretty small tributary and a bit random. I was up on the North Fork just for the day yesterday and hiked up and fished Haypress for the first time. Fun time catching a fish out of pretty much every little drop down pool, but all the fish were small, wild rainbows. After a while I was hoping I could pull something a bit bigger out, but no luck. I had heard the same thing - that it was full of brookies and it is possible I did not go far enough up the creek (I would estimate I went up about 3 miles), but not a brookie in the lot. I probably caught about 20 fish - all on dries, but the largest was maybe pushing 8 inches...
Also spent an hour on the Yuba around the bridge and caught a couple fish - 2 rainbows about 10 inches each.
This was the first time I was on the NF Yuba in years and years and only the third time in my life and I forgot how nice a river it is. The campground access points, which seemed the easiest, were a lot more crowded than I expected though...
