Have been fishing the creek lately mostly up near the resort on the resort side of the river and mainly in the evenings,its been fishing decent with periods of real hot action.Yesterday I fished for less than 2 hours and landed 8 fish and lost 3.One fish about yanked the rod out of my hand,and fought like a steelhead! He measured 19" and was absolutely beautiful born and bred in Putah.The rest of the fish ranged in sizes from 12" to 17". All fish were taken on a Fox Poopah variation that My friend Bernie Westin created.I fished this fly and had the best luck in the backwater areas near the bank and in the shade.Dead drift with a swing at the end of the drift holding the fly at the end of the drift for about a minute produced most of the strikes.

i would agree, i fish in a close area to you alot.  i have seen alot of activity during the evenings.  fish breaching the water and feeding off the top.  it slows down when this pesky beaver/muskrat comes out to play and the fish stop jumping.  but other than that its been great latley...im gonna head out there right now.

Guess i need a lesson, i've been doing terrible lately, lots of planters and very small wild bows. managed one 19 inch wild out of approx. 30 hours of fishing. Is the area below the damn the best water on putah for wild fish, theres to many people there so i rarely fish it.

 Dont feel too bad, as i have had similar luck...or lack there of on putah. I kinda feel like a crapy fisherman on that creek! I have the same feeling about the damn area, although i have had great fishing near damns of other waters (san Juan River)...I think my problem is i dont have the experience fishing such deep water... it has a lot of potential though, hope i can crack it!!

Guys:


Putah doesn't give up her secrets easily.  But with patience, and by reading the posts of fisherman who have success and say where they were and what they were using, it will get better.  Summers can be tough on Putah, no doubt.  Lots of bait fisherman, and the best spots get pounded.  Putah is not an easy creek to learn on in my view.  Also, if you can find someone on the creek who is catching fish and is friendly, they may share some of their secrets with you.  Also, consider hiring a guide who knows the creek and who can teach you how to fish it.
