My son is a beginner fly fisher. We want to come to Putah Creek. What kind of flies does he need and where can we get them? Can he fish from the side? Also, someone told me that the creek is too high to fish now. Is that true?

The creek is not too high to fish but with summer flows there are areas that just arn't accessable that one normally fishes in the winter. No idea how old your son is but higher flows make me nervous with my kid up there. Pick and choose where you take him and he whould be fine though.

Greg has bugs for sale through his site. They work for Putah. If you don't pick them up through here then the store Pardesha's (sp) at the lower bridge carries a selection of Gregs flys.

Depending on where you are coming from and the drive isn't too bad your son might have more fun in a small stream in the Sierra. I know at least with my boy #'s are fun and they loose interest quick.

Hey There:

If you want your kid to love fly fishing, take him to the North Fork of the Yuba, and hit Salmon Creek above the town of Downieville.  Salmon Creek is an amazing boulder/pool strewn feeder creek that is gin clear but has super willing 4-12 inch rainbows and brookies. If you put on a small caddis, you'll draw a strike in every pool (maybe multiple strikes).  I take beginners there to get them psyched about fishing. Nothing like catching a trout on a dry fly as a first timer.

Scenery is off the charts too.

Good Luck.

My son is 15 years old. We live in the Bay Area, and want to find a day trip for a first outing. Someone told me Beaver Creek in Calaveras Big Trees would be good now. Any suggestions? I agree, success would be good. Thanks.

I'd go to Downieville and Salmon Creek.  You can do it in a day.

'Bout a 3.5 hour drive from San Francisco

Good Luck

Re Downie/Salmon, might also want to try July dry fly action in Haypress creek, which is a feeder into North Fork Yuba in Sierra City at Wild Plum campground.  There is reportedly good dry action for small/medium brooks in July.  Sierra City is north of Downieville (10-15 mins or so).  That is bear territory, tho.

Do you have to fish there in the early morning or evening, or can you fish in the middle of the day?

JL,

Does Salmon Creek fish the same in the summer as in the fall (like right now)?  I've got a friend who just started and he would really like to catch one.
