had an ok day seven fish landed all about 12 inchers all but one wild, wich is very surprising, i found one back eddy just loaded with wild rainbows, i recently started to really fish back eddys alot and i must say they seem to produce well, but they take pateince, still looking for my first putah brownie, what type of water do they tend to hold in ? anyone ? also had a chance to try out my new gortex lightweight waders, man i cant beleive i was using old neopreme for so long, i highly recomend the gprtex waders, worth every penny and then some.  I saw a guy fishing the resort area with nightcrawlers on a fly rod ! that was odd i thought. i have also noticed that alot of flyfisherman tend to have an additude torwards spin fisherman, i dont think this is very cools guys, not all of em leave beer cans and empty bait containers. for many a years i was a dedicated bait fisher and never left these things behind, and i do beleive there is alot of skill involved in both bait fishing and flyfishing. well most of us wether you use bait or fly tackle were all there just to have some fun, see some nice scenery and of course catch a few fish. Ok and if any baitfisherman read this post, please remember if you plan to release fish cut the hook off in them.

I'm as newbie as they get. But, as a stepfather, I'm in position to influence a couple of younger fellows ( 14 and 16 ) You said:

"please remember, if you plan to release fish, cut the hook off in them?"

I'm not entirely sure what you mean. I caught a small, maybe 5" trout today that I released, but he swallowed the salmon eggs and I had trouble getting the hook out; should I have just cut the line?

When fishing with bait, the fish tend to swallow the hook.  It happens occasionally in fly fishing as well.  Consequently, you end up hooking the fish deep in the throat or gills.  When this happens, it is best to cut the line.  Removing the hook can cause a great deal of damage to the fish and can be fatal.  By cutting the line, you can release the fish quickly without handling it too much.  The hook will just rust out.  The use barbless hooks is also recommended.

Funny you should mention a fly rodder using bait. My first rod as a kid was a 9ft fly rod. Since then I have always used a fly rod and have used bait(worms, eggs). I have found that I have better control of my line when using the fly rod. I normally fish fast moving water.

I continue to use my fly rod for both bait and flies...it provides for a quick change over.....

When using bait, I rarely if ever have fish swallow the hook. I believe that is because I am fishing moving water so the fish strike and then I hook.

Your tip however about cutting the line is a good one if the fish injests the hook. Hooks aren't that expensive.

So i wasn't the one you saw fly rodding with bait, however I thought I was the only one who did that.
