PC's unique bows.

Always been curious as to why a lot of the bows I catch at PC have large orange slits under their chin. I've seen it almost exclusively on all the fish I catch larger than 16". I know they aren't cutbows, just thought it was interesting and haven't seen it on any other large Bows I've caught in CA. Could it be a result of diet? Crayfish etc? Anyone else notice this?

I've seen large fish with and without the orange slits.

Why can't they be cutbows?

Well they'd have to reproduce with cutthroat in order to be cutbows. Were there hybrids or cutthroat stocked into PC at any point? To my knowledge I'd say never.

There was definitely a coastal cutty that swam in there before there were dams. The Truckee has cut bows in it and there aren't cutthroat in there anymore.

I think that cutbow marking can be passed down through lineage.

Actually the truckee has Lohantan Cutthroats. They've been stocking them the last couple yrs at least.

The cutbows I am referring to refer to the ones over the past 10 years? They have tried very unsuccessfully to stock the river. With the monitoring of the program there have never been any successful cutthroat spawn. They actually have not stocked the river with them in over five years, they have tried rectory in the reservoirs.

I am on the board of the Truckee Trout Unlimited. They have not stocked the pilot peak strain of cutthroat the past few years. There were some fish that moved out of Pyramid into the lower river to spawn down in Nevada a few years ago.

You're talking about Nevada this whole time?

Either way, how does that lead to cutbows on the California side?

LCT's were definitely put into the Truckee. I know they stocked it last year for sure. As for coastal Cuts getting into Putah watershed that sounds cray cray. Not saying it didn't ever happen. I just know the the current range for those dudes doesn't extend south of the Eel river system.

You realize fish move through the entire river right? Fly fisherman have caught LCT on the California side too. And as far as what this has to do with cutbows.....nothing. You said LCT haven't been stocked in the truckee because you're on the Truckee Troy Unlimited board and I've just been trying to tell you they have. Actually CA DFW have also stocked LCT into the Truckee. But I'm done talking about this. You don't wanna believe the people thatve caught them that's fine.
