I want to cure a batch of shrimp for steelhead. (called coon shrimp) It's difficult to find whole small shrimp in the SF bay area to use. I've been thinking of using grass shrimp. They are easy enough to get with a small gage trap and a little bait. Has anyone tried curing them for steelhead? If so what was the result in terms of toughness and effectiveness on steelhead? Thanks, East Bay Ed
Thank you for your input deck dog. I'm now 70 and have fly fished for almost 60 years. I put this on this board thinking that someone might have tried curing grass shrimp. I love steelhead fishing and have fly fished for them for many years. I have to say that in the past few years when I turn in the info for my steelhead card that it has been depressing. Last year I fished once for steelhead. The year before it was also once. I think it has been five years since I've actually fished more then a few times for steelhead. I still fly fish for trout, and I still try to wade aggressively. However, it's not getting any easier. As you get older you have a harder time seeing the bottom and are less sure of your footing. Moving up and down rivers is the way I most like to fish. I don't know how many years of this type of fishing I have left. To extend those years I've found that a spinning rod allows me to make casts without having to risk life and limb. I put this request out on three boards. Two of them got responses. Not much happened on this board, but it is one that I have been part of for years. It only takes one response to make the request worth while.
Well put. I just hope I'm able to still get around by the time I hit 70. I'm only 54 but arthritis, knees, shoulder and back pain along with failing eyesight sure have made their presence known. On the flip side, I buy a steelhead card every year and haven't put a day in chasing chrome in a looooong time.

Thanks for the offer, Lightfoot. Won't be attending the Crabfest. I'm actively pursuing my second favorite outdoor entertainment. I've been collection chanterelle mushrooms all over the East Bay hills.
Hey first post and new member, fighting a bad case of chrome sickness here.
I've never tried curing the coon shrimp. But I've been recommended by the bait guys I fished with last year. I tried the crimson borxofire by pautskis on some ****tail shrimp and they took a lot of color but I didn't let them sit for long enough to see about the toughness.
Now that I think of it I would say they are effective. Met a fellow fishing those who had good number of grabs and then landed a beauty drifting one of those coon shrimp. I have no idea where he got em or I would probably have tried them. It was real small and shrimpy also beet red so probably cured the guy had them rigged completely over the hook and it looked like it was going to stay there.
