I tend to split shot rubber worms off of points. Mix up the colors until you find what they like that particular day. Lots of guys use plugs (shad) and swim baits as well. They tend to cover a lot more water as it's a faster approach to fishing. Obviously it's best to be afloat and cast towards shore whichever method.

Fished Saturday a couple miles past Oak shores. Bite was a little slow but fun. Landed around a dozen fish with about as many missed grabs/lost fish. Landed one nice sized pissed off smallmouth, the rest were all carbon copy 12-14 inchers. Only caught one largmouth.

Nothing makes a fish seem bigger than almost being caught...
Use a float tube and a #8 or #6 dark streamer with a weighted head along the shoreline. My favorite is the Flying Cat. Then I use a very long leader/tippet of 10ft and twitch the fly very slowly down deep - pay attention, some of the big sows will suck it up very gently.
