Went out yesterday. It was the first time I observed a full blown blossom of NZ mud snails. Some areas are carpeted with the little devils. I found a good PDF from OR DFW regarding preventing spread.... I'm off to clean my gear....
Can you tell where you found them?
In the past I've seen them mostly around acesses 2 and 3. But the word carpet never entered my mind when describing what I saw. Now 11+ years after discovery I'm surprised to hear this.
I noticed them at access 1 and 3. Not sure about around the bridge. Lots on the rocks and silt. Do we know what promotes population growth of the snails? I've been fishing the Putah since 2008 and, although I knew there were NZ mud snails, I've never really seen them so obviously covering rocks.

Myself and biologist Ken Davis have studied the mud snail for quite a few years( ken did the brain work I was there as a helper). Over the years I have noticed the snail population getting very dense in certain areas and then almost disappearing in the same spot. I am not quite sure why, ken might know ,maybe I will speak with him and see if we can get an answer.
