I will be visiting Fairfield later this month and hope to fish a couple days on Putah. If conditions allow for fishing (due to the fires), I will purchase my license online prior to travelling. I only glanced quickly, but is there a requirement for a separate trout stamp? Also, I would be shipping some of my equipment ahead of my visit and would like to know if felt soles are still legal.
just need fishing lic. no stamp, felt soles ok, access lots 1-5 ok, fish north side of creek Yolo county, south side closed Solano county. waters high wade safe, small bugs 18-20-22 get deep
To follow up on your questions, be aware that Putah Creek has a serious problem with a New Zealand Mud Snail infestation and your felt soled wading boots will undoubtedly harbor the microscopic little buggers when you exit the stream. To ensure that you don't spread the infestation your boots and waders are going to need a thorough scrubbing with a stiff brush and soapy water and then both need to be sprayed with commercialy avaiable "409" cleaning solvent before you can use them in any other waters. A lot of the guides and people who regularly frequent Putah Creek keep a separate set of waders and boots for exclusive use only on Putah Creek.
The water flow is still pretty fast for this small stream, 350 - 450 cfs, so if you are not an experienced wader I would definitely recommend having a wading staff available for some of the narrower spots.
There is still alot of poison oak and blackberry like brambles in the areas which were not burned so wearing a long sleeved shirt could be beneficial.
Thanks much for the info..The report I had been reading made it seem like the area may be closed for an extended period of time..Based on your replies, I feel better about getting equipment ready for the trip..I currently live in GA and fish often in the N. GA mountains and switched to Simms vibram soles a couple years ago..Since I will have numerous trips out your way over the next six months or so, I was planning on sending out my 'backup' waders and boots (felt soles) - to eliminate the transporting back and forth each time (hotel offered to store them for me).
Anyway - thanks for the willingness to share info. I have a few more fish related questions, but I'll try to post in the proper forum..When I
If your going to fish any river that has access to the ocean you will need a steelhead stamp, not on Putah, but Sac. Yuba, Trinity and so on. In the next month or so water flows in Putah will be lower and fish better.
Another question for the group. Is Putah now barbless year round? Is "smashing" down the barb acceptable? We have a barbless stream her in n. GA where the game wardens carry a cloth with them to check for the presence of barbs, by pushnig the point through and when extracting it checking for the any fibers. I just want to make sure I am legal and doing the right thing. Thanks.
Barbless year around, C&R year around. Each warden has his own technique for checking barbs. Some use a cloth, others a cotton ball. Do the best you can in flattening; you can do the test yourself with a cotton ball.
