I just moved to Pleasant Hill from Seattle this past summer. I am spoiled having incredible river access back home.
finally scored a hall pass and decided to scout the Putah Creek area. I ran into a couple nice fly anglers today.
I just wanted to know on a general basis how safe the area is? I was parked in a lot that was nice paved and split into 2 different lots. I parked at the area on the left lot and had 2 different vehicles that made me feel uneasy. The first was a newer silver chevy equinox type SUV, the guy kept moving his vehicle back and forth to each lot, then he'd get in the back seat. never could tell what he was up to, but it was hot out. He kinda looked like a gangsta homie but very weird behavior.
then another newer car pulled up with 4 younger hispanic dudes sitting low rider style next to my car while i was rigging up. they were all just sitting there doing nothing. I felt uneasy so i left and drove up to the bridge area and fished. when i drove back, they were still there, sitting in the car. makes you wonder why someone would be there and just sit there in the car for hours.
back home we have tweakers (meth-heads) and other odd people who sometime grow pot in the woods near the rivers. occasional car break-ins etc....
Just wanted to get an idea?? Also need to get some ideas on what you guys do for personal safety when fishing alone?
Up in Seattle we are legally allowed to open carry while fishing or you can get a concealed permit but i am not certain about the side arm regs in this area.
My preference is a good fishing buddy and a good cigar
Thanks

I'm very short on time this morning but, it is legal to cc in California while fishing, many do. Open carry in Ca is a no no. Vehicle break ins are not uncommon at Putah. California is slowly turning into a shall issue state. Check out Calguns.net for cc info in your county.
Welcome to the board

I would really look into the firearm laws for CA before you decide to carry. You may be able to carry, but it might have to be unloaded. Also, I thought that I saw a sign somewhere at Putah Creek saying that firearms are prohibited, so you might be out of luck.
A good place to start reading is CA penal codes section 12025 and 12027g. Also take a look at this thread: www.calguns.net/calgunforum/showthread.php. Read the penal codes for yourself instead of relying on what someone on the internet said.
Being California, just because you think you are legally defending yourself with a firearm doesn't mean that you won't be a world of legal hurt later. My suggestions, and these are only mine... There is no such thing as a warning shot, if you shoot you shoot to kill. After a shooting, call the police ASAP and tell them you were forced to defend yourself. Then keep quiet and find a lawyer.
For all the trouble that it is to carry and use a firearm, I'm thinking that you are better off with some type of pepper spray. Another thing to consider... if you think that you will need a firearm to go fishing, then you probably aren't having fun.
I've been fishing Putah off and on since 2000 and haven't run into a single problem. I've read of cars being broken into, but I also heard that most of that was eliminated when they got rid of that tweaker camp supervisor. Don't keep valuables in your car.
