How big of a net is reasonable?

I wanted to switch to a rubber net, because I felt like a mesh net isn't good for the fish and I hated it when my flies would get tangled.  I got this net:  http://www.fishwest.net/flyfishing/product/BR52SJTBOS.html#.VRDXumTF_7c

It's 12 X 17, which turns out to be freaking huge compared to my old one.  Has anyone used a net this big?  If so, is it annoying to carry around?  I use a magnetic release attached to the strap of my waders.

If the size doesn't hinder your movement much whether it's hiking or actually fishing bigger is always better. I've lost or nearly lost many fish trying to land them in too small of a net. Also better on the fish to give them some room while in there. That net looks like a good one. I have one similar for bigger fish with a scale built in (forget who made it) and use our Leland Trout Landing Net with the magnetic release for average fish or when helping others enjoy their first fish.

Also, try attaching the net release to the top (opposite of handle) and it may not swing around as much with the lighter end facing downward.

Hope ya fill it up soon!

Thanks for the info LelandFly. Sounds like a good tip to flip my net around. Seems like it'd be easier to grab that way too.

Clubby,

With a net that size, I take you for an optimist.

Ha, to say the least. I can't wait to see what a 6" trout looks like in it.
