New to Putah

hi. I am new to fishing Putah Creek and wanted to get some advice. I am specifically interested in fishing the Lake Solano area where fish may be taken. I do respect the water and ecology but I also enjoy a fresh fish dinner. Are there any special regulations that I need to be aware of?

I catch both trout and bass. though this time of year I would imagine the trout fishing is better.

Thanks for your help.

If you want a fish for the pot there are much easier/better places to catch them than Lake Solano.

here's a list.

Klutch,

Actually lake Berryessa should be turning over fairly soon and offering good fishing for trout/salmon through the Winter.   Once the lake turns over, the trout/salmon will be found near the surface and much easier to catch.  Two-four lbs are average with many fish much larger.  The water will start to warm back up in March and bring back the bass bite while the trout/salmon will head deep again.

thanks for the feedback. i would normally go to Berryessa but I have business in Davis tomorrow and if I have time, I wanted quick access to waters. Berryessa is an extra hour away. i was hoping to experiment with new waters but I definitely want to be legal about it.

ive driven through Winters to get to the Lake. PC looks beautiful and very enticing, but I know about the zero take. I was curious about Solano.

I wouldn't waste much time fishing Lake Solano. I have been paddle boarding there the last two summers trying to find trout. I can tell you with much effort I have caught only one trout in my quest. You can get to Berryessa in about 10 mins from Solano.

thanks for the advice. I guess I need to suck it up and commit to the drive. I will most likely be fishing the west bank either at Spanish Flat or Capell Cove. But I do appreciate the heads up.

Berryessa is only a 10-20 minutes past Putah.

And klutch, you can fish the section of the lake nearest to Putah and the dam with just as good success when the trout are on top. The Markley/Narrows/Dam area of Berryessa holds a ton of trout. In fact the trout rearing pens for the private stocking program are located right at Markley Cove, about 5 min from the dam and the beginning of the IDR.
