You can float tube Lake Solano from the island down to the bridge in the summer and do very well for cookie cutter browns. Dry flys early in the morning and late in the evening produce fish when casting to rises. Water boatmen imitations also work well as I'm sure other patterns do as well but I was always there for the dries.

That being said I havn't floated Putah in a couple of years. Hell I don't get out much to fish anymore. I prefer the northern end of the state but Putah is close and satisfies the itch when need be.

whats a good place to catch browns this time of year when the flows come down?

I would assume the browns are all back to Lk Solano,and are very hard to catch.I really dont think there are many big browns in Putah/Lk solano,as Rob stated in the summer months a person can float tube the lake and catch 12-14 inch browns but the real big boys can be very elusive.I have only almost caught one monster 2 years ago on a waterboatman pattern,he came out of the water a couple of times and then took off like a freight train and fried the drag sytem on my reel.Rickey Lopez and Toby Uppinghouse were both there to witness that one!!I only fish Solano a few times a year but I have noticed that the last couple of years I rarely hooked a brown,mostly rainbows is what we landed.And because I dont put in alot of time there is probably the reason I dont have much sucess with the real big browns.

I was out on Solano last May in my canoe with a friend, stripping woolly buggers for the planters, and my friend was lucky enough to hook up and land a nice 24" brown. It was good fortune and might never happen again, but it was a very nice fish. I have fished in Solano and Putah for a bit over a year, but haven't managed a brown in either as yet.

Thanks for the info guys. I've never really fished for browns in solano. I just needed to know because I wanted to take my new pantoon boat that I got for christmas that I haven't even used yet out. Plus I wanted to get out and fish some place thats not blown out or high flows like the creek is right now. It's coming down though. So what type of line should I use Just a regular intermediate line? Ya I'll have to ask my uncle about that fish gregg. I don't Know if you remember me but I'm rick's nephew. I've gotten into flyfishing alot since I last saw you. Well thanks for all the info guys.
