Volunteer Opportunity with PCT and CDFW October 28-November 1
Permalink

Greetings to all:

A major part of the Wild Trout Designation process is the collection of data to evaluate the status and health of the wild trout population.

We are scheduling two 2 to 3 volunteer opportunities with the Department of Fish and Wildlife for the end of October, Monday the 28th-Friday November 1

1)    1.   An electro-fishing survey at the sites previously surveyed in 2009-2010. The purpose of the survey is to enumerate and size fish. Hopefully, the data collected will confirm what we have seen from the box and online angler surveys, that is, an increase in the population since the C/R regulations were put in place.

2)      2A spawning site silt loosening and vegetation removal operation to make clean spawning gravel available to the fish. This is scheduled for afternoons after the electro-fishing has been completed. If necessary November 1 has been reserved for the clean out.

3)      We are also planning to put information signage up at several of the main spawning areas and approved regulation signage all along the creek. This activity will likely be separate from the two above and will require a separate sign-up.

Please consider joining us as a volunteer for all of these activities. The first two are described on the volunteer sign-up spreadsheet at the following link.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AtiIUgFCFVo9dENpOG9BdmlEbE5HbjhLUzZkUGVjelE&usp=sharing

All electro-fishing operations are dependent upon the Creek flow levels. If the flows are too high for safe wading, the above dates may be canceled. We will try to notify everyone if cancellation occurs, but please check the spreadsheet before the date(s) you have signed up for.  Any other updates will be by email.

Thank you all for participating and supporting PCT.
The Board of Directors

Approximately 35 members and friends of PCT have signed up for the efishing and spawning bed cleanout projects to go along with an equal number of CDFW staff. This a very important survey for us and the fishery and is reflected in both the effort being put forth by DFW and the building evidence from  paper and online surveys, increasing fishing pressure, and other data being analyzed that the fishery is definitely improving.

Other opportunities to help with placing new signage will be coming in November (weekend days).

At Access 5 about 4X the number of RT were surveyed versus 2009 and 2010. These are very raw numbers at this point in time, but I believe this helps confirm all the recent anecdotal comments that there are more fish in the creek. I had a similar report for the resort area for yesterday: probably 2X increase in number surveyed.

As I said very raw data, but is very encouraging

We were only able to obtain a fish count on the lower section of the 2 that we were scheduled to electroshock at access 3. The boulder garden had been carved to a depth that was impossible to survey. We did see some toads in the water there too. The count in the lower section was also high, with many of the fish being first and second year fish.

Only being able to survey 1 of the 2 areas left us with a lot of time to work on spawning habitat enhancement at the deer sign. It was surprising to see how much the area had silted up in 2 years. Cliff, Rich, Mark, Bob and I have some sore shoulders and arms today after attacking the the weeds and growth in the stream.

It was a beautiful day yesterday and the fall really is a great time to be at Putah.
