Napa River Stripers with Clousers

The Napa is starting to have a little run of decent Striped Bass swimming in the water.  I finally caught a 19 incher with a chartreuse clouser from shore...good times.  Hell of a fight!

I was using a cheap Cabelas 8 wt rod but with good Rio "Outbound" fly line with a Striper on the box.

Just wait till fall/spring. Fishing near creek inlets, such as napa creek downtown and milliken farther up can pick you up some nice fish. There's usually a big run of striper around october, with quite a few larger fish showing. Right around salmon time. Also in early spring after the big storm pulse flows, striper fishing can again be decent with larger fish milling around creek mouths gobbling steelie fry and smolts. I caught a 30+ incher earlier this year at the oxbow from shore. If you happen to hook a steelie at this time please handle and release carefully and quickly. There's some big spawners that run up napa creek and if you catch a spent fish downrunning you can stress out a big mama, which studies show are more likely to survive to spawn multiple times than the bucks are.
