I was up last week. Usually I check the report with Mountain Hardware in Truckee: ( http://www.mountainhardwareandsports.com/fishing-report ) Before going up I also read a Truckee guides report saying that he was getting off the river before noon.
They were discouraging people from fishing after 11:00 because water temperatures were high and fish that were caught were being stressed. In the evening I went out to fish the Little Truckee, but decided to check out Hershdale first. There had been some thunder showers and the daytime temperatures were down. Anyway, there were a number of people at Hershdale, so I decided to go down and check out the canyon. The water seemed to be higher then when I drove up last month so I fished it. Caught three small ones on midges in my favorite hole and then moved downstream to another hole I like. Got a couple of grabs close to where I was wading, and then shot a couple of casts across to the far side. Hooked the biggest fish I've seen in ten years in the canyon. Anyway, he made a run down into the rapids and one quick jump before taking my dropper. He left me stressed. Risk vs. reward. I used midges on light tippet material to get grabs, but was in no position to work a big fish.
But to answer your question the water may have been a little on the warm side and the fish are less active in the day then at night and during the early morning hours. Because I was further down the river I was picking up the water coming out of Stampede and Boca which was a little cooler.
I recently went to Truckee and got Scunked we landed at my fav spot geared up and fished and fished swiched fly and again and again added more weight nothing from 1pm till close to 7 ? , water temp id guess to be mid sixties . we where above the little truckee out let ? my guess water temp .. please feel to comment regarding this issue of water temp and trout not bitting ? Thanks Richard From Napa
My guess is the water from 1 - 7 was at or above 68 which makes life on the Truckee extra tough. Maybe try to get out there earlier when temps are down. On the water by 7 off by 10, early lunch. Home early. - Tight Lines.
Thats what the message I got said . I called a local guide from :Big Fly Guide Service " in Truckee said he returned my call after returning home . I could not believe how poorly I did he confirmed my suspicions of high water temps . now I have a second oppinion confirming that . I wonder when they will drop back to better temps for trout fishing . Anyone know prime temps peramiters high, low , for best fishing . I have done well in the past . not sure what month I landed this beut in . but when its good its good
If you research lethal water temps. for trout you may be surprised at how high they can be. I think the big problem is the recovery after being caught in warm water. Water temps. last week on east walker in the mid to high 60's and you ain't gonna tell me those fish weren't active, They were rising quit nicely.
