split shot ......how close to the fly
Permalink

I haven't fly fished in 45 years.  I once was pretty good at it.  My question regards the placement of split shot on the leader.  How far from the fly do you place the shot?  I'm using floating fly line in 5wt with a 9 foot leader on an 8.5 ft pole.  In the old days when using a salmon egg instead of a fly we would sometimes put a shot up about 12-18 inches from the hook.  I never used shot with flys.  I have a lot to learn/relearn.  Thanks for any help.

Sam try 10-12" up to 18" is ok too at times anywhere in between can work.. Give it a whirl. And keep plugging away.

I like to add a triple surgeons knot between my leader + tippet so that the split shot can't slide down close to my flies. Play with it and see what works best for you.
